@JenRobichaux@Dale_Chu@PostOpinions Successful businesses *also* give yearly raises. They also give COLA raises because of things like inflation.
As for failing students…why do I get punished for a student failing when they refuse to show up or do the work? Let me fail them. That’s admin doing that, not me.
@JenRobichaux@Dale_Chu@PostOpinions Don’t most jobs pay you better for more years of service? Educate already provides increased pay for higher education. And most educators are required to get professional development.
And how do we measure performance? The teacher ultimately isn’t taking the test.
@JenRobichaux@Dale_Chu@PostOpinions Do most employers try to encourage better candidates via low pay? You can’t demand better outcomes or candidates if you aren’t willing to pay for it. Right?
@JenRobichaux@Dale_Chu@PostOpinions I agree student-centered policy should help teachers too. But politicians keep calling policies “for students” while ignoring the adults who make them work. Safer schools, planning time, qualified staff, and better pay help both. Why frame that as anti-student?
@JenRobichaux@Dale_Chu@PostOpinions Who else is fighting to help teachers besides the union?
Maybe if we didn’t mistreat teachers…they wouldn’t feel the need to be in a union?
@3xpops@notheydontcare “Teachers get summers off” is bad math.
Other professionals don’t work 365 days either.
260 weekdays − holidays − PTO = about 230–240 workdays.
Teachers work roughly 195–205 official days, then add the work people pretend doesn’t count: grading, planning, parent contact, etc

This is the most insulting statement from teachers, ever. They really must think the public is stupid.
We understand completely that teachers are on extended leave during the summer and therefore not earning $$. We understand that if they are pulling a paycheck, the $$ for those checks were held in escrow from each of their checks during the year.
We got that!
But no employee for any company gets paid for time off unless they burn earned PTO. So, teachers are no more special in this than anyone.
What we also don't recieve without burning PTO are 2 weeks at Chrismas, Fall/Spring Breaks, and any other day off during the year that a state/school board chooses.
So with all that said, the starting hourly salary for a teacher in @CharMeckSchools, North Carolina is currently $28.46/hr. #nced #ncpol
@CynicTK@choices1776@Fla_Pol@CityofJax@MayorDeegan@AGGancarski Why is it the business someone in Key West what pet projects my local representative in rural north Florida that I voted for wants to spend on? Why does the STATE need to be involved AT ALL? It’s a local matter. Especially when it is local money.
They don’t vote here. I do.
@Principal_Jon This is what happens when people start removing books from lists because of “concerning content.” (Within reason)
I’m honestly surprised your kid is allowed to read.
@CynicTK@choices1776@Fla_Pol@CityofJax@MayorDeegan@AGGancarski For *their* district and *THEIR* municipalities. They are lobbying for jobs, money, and laws.
That’s not the same as having one county or city telling voters in another county or city who they can and can’t tax within their borders.
Local > State > Feds
Right?
@CynicTK@choices1776@Fla_Pol@CityofJax@MayorDeegan@AGGancarski The “state should…” is a fair enough statement. But isn’t that up to the taxpayer to decide and vote?
Do you want the residents of Key West determine how your local money is spent? I bet not
@choices1776@Fla_Pol@CityofJax@MayorDeegan@AGGancarski Btw, your position is fair. I thought similarly until I examined the expanding powers and takeovers that Florida has been doing at the expense of local government. Local governments tend to oppose a lot of the stuff state cronyism is profiting on.
@SusanWi29067178@Fla_Pol@CityofJax@MayorDeegan@AGGancarski Ok. The state can hold cities accountable without cutting off the money they need to operate.
You realize the state wants to make local government beholden to them for funding right?
