I absolutely love South Africans.

I was just standing in a queue, waiting to pay for my groceries when the guy in front of me turned around and asked if I have a loyalty card (the shop doesn’t matter, this is not a sponsored post), hoping to save a little cash.

I’d left my phone in the car, so I was like, “Ah man, sorry, I don’t.”

Before I could even blink, the woman behind me jumped in and offered hers.

Not just to him but to me as well!

She smiled and said something along the lines of, “If we all share, we all save.”

Flip man.

We were all different. Different backgrounds, different walks of life but none of that mattered. Because at our core, we are South African… and we show up for each other in the kindest, most beautiful ways.

Just a simple, silly, Saturday story but it did make my heart smile. ❤️🇿🇦

I’m sitting here trying to write something inspirational.

For you. For me. For us.

But I am finding it quite difficult.

I’ve kind of become known for my morning “pep” talks. But it’s Monday. And South Africans are angry. We are in stage 9.5 today of the power cuts today - I’m renaming the power cuts according to the number of hours we will be off in a day - so we’re in stage 9.5 today and stage 10 tomorrow. We’ve lived like this for 17 years now.

But how?

I have no clue.

I saw people shaming each other yesterday on social media for having their pool pumps on during “peak times” because the government says that they are the problem now. Are you joking? What is a peak time? Like, we should just have electricity all the time. And use it for whatever we want BECAUSE WE PAY FOR IT.

Is this what we’ve become? Fighting with our neighbours about pool pumps???

You do understand that the (insert thing you own here) is not the problem?!?

These okes will blame everything on the power cuts except themselves. Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero” is a great soundtrack to the current people in charge.

FFS.

In his recent “State of the Nation” address, squirrel regaled a story about a young South African born in the ANC era. Her name is Tintswalo and her life is “better” because of his party. Apparently.

I just snorted out loud so hard that I nearly looked like JuJu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium this weekend. Sis.

The truth is that Tintswalo can’t remember a time when she had electricity for a whole day. Tintswalo has stopped reading the news, as it just makes her sad. Another corruption scandal. More money looted. 75 murders a day. Harrowing poverty. It’s all just too much. She looks forward to a time when people are not begging in our streets, while our ministers wear really tacky (disgustingly expensive) Dolce & Gabbana tracksuits and drink expensive champagne. She looks at the people in charge with disdain. She longs for leaders who put the country before themselves.

Tintswalo is 30 years old this year.

I’m not sure if she has ever voted. She’s never really spoken about it. Except now she is. She’s being very vocal about not supporting the ANC any longer. She sees how they have destroyed a country that could have been so much more. Remember the promises they made? Where are all those things?

Tintswalo believes that we deserve better than this.

Every single South African deserves better.

Our president spoke of this utopia where a person called Tintswalo is living her best life.

And I think that is what we all dream of.

So here is my motivation for today. The elections are coming up. Have a conversation today with someone about voting. And speak openly about not voting for the ANC. We deserve better than this. So let’s make it so.

Let’s make Tintswalo’s South Africa a real one.
