@scurvypiratehog With how Sonic 2 ended and how we first see Ivo in 3, I'd take a guess that Ivo thought that Metal Sonic would be a failure and gave up when Metal Sonic was almost complete. Perhaps even Metal Sonic somehow activated itself and put itself together to only leave shortly after 2.

@scurvypiratehog My guess would be that somehow Shadow saves him at the last second but was a second late for Ivo getting hit in the head by a piece of the failing cannon and ends up with amnesia for 1/2 or 3/4 of 4 while learning he originally built Metal between 1 and 2.
