Accurate forecasts and early warnings save lives and help communities prepare for floods, droughts, storms, and heatwaves.
This #WorldMetDay, we celebrate the scientists and observers working every day to understand our changing climate. #ObservingToday#ProtectingTomorrow #EarlyWarning #ClimateAction
Weather forecasting saves lives, protects property, and improves economic efficiency by enabling proactive decisions. It helps people plan daily activities, supports farmers in managing crops, assists businesses in avoiding transportation risks, and helps governments respond to disasters. Accurate forecasts are increasingly important as severe weather intensifies #WorldMeteorologicalDay #ObservingToday #ProtectingTomorrow @WMO

Kenya Seeks KSh 247 Million Budget Increase for Environment and Climate Programs
The State Department for Environment and Climate Change has proposed a KSh 247 million increase in its recurrent budget for the 2025/26 financial year to support operations, settle legal obligations, and strengthen environmental programs.
The Supplementary Estimates for FY 2025/26 were presented by Environment and Climate Change Principal Secretary Dr. Eng. Festus Ngeno to the Departmental Committee on Environment, Forestry and Mining, chaired by Mwala MP Hon. Eng. Vincent Musyoka, during a meeting held at a hotel in Machakos.
The PS said the additional funds are mainly required to cover operations and maintenance, legal obligations, and transfers to the National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND). However, the development budget is expected to decrease by KSh 231 million, affecting some environmental restoration and mining projects.
Additional funds will also support Kenya’s participation in major international environmental events and negotiations, including climate conferences and global environmental forums, which provide platforms for the State Department to mobilize resources.
Despite funding constraints, the State Department reported several achievements during the review period, including issuing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) licences and conducting air quality monitoring in Nairobi and Mombasa.
The department also undertook enforcement actions related to the nationwide single-use plastics ban, raised tree seedlings, and rehabilitated degraded forest in the Cherangany ecosystem.
Additionally, the department trained stakeholders on environmental compliance and carbon markets, while weather agencies issued timely forecasts to support early warning systems.
However, the proposed reduction in development spending will significantly impact two major initiatives. The Kenya Gold Mercury-Free Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining Project and the Restoration and Management of Ecosystems for Climate Change Resilience Project.
The PS decried that the budget cuts could reduce forest rehabilitation targets and decrease tree seedling production.
He urged Parliament to increase financial allocations and avoid frequent budget cuts, arguing that adequate funding is necessary for Kenya to effectively address climate change impacts and fulfill its environmental mandate.
Members present included Hon. Charity Kathambi (Njoro), Hon. Namuar Emathe (Turkana Central), and Hon. Joseph Wainaina (Nominated). The meeting was also attended by NEMA Director General Dr. Mamo Mamo, NETFUND CEO Samson Toniok, Secretary Administration Mr. Mwongo Chimwaga, among other heads of departments.
President Ruto to Assent to Meteorology Bill Transforming Kenya Meteorological Department into Authority
His Excellency the President Dr William Ruto has assent to the Meteorology Bill, paving the way for the transformation of the Kenya Meteorological Department into the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA).
The new law marks a significant milestone in strengthening Kenya’s weather and climate services by establishing an autonomous authority mandated to regulate, coordinate, and deliver meteorological services across the country.
Once operational, the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority will enhance the provision of accurate and timely weather and climate information to support key sectors of the economy, including agriculture, aviation, water resource management, and disaster risk reduction.
Environment and Climate Change Principal Secretary Dr Eng Festus K Ng'eno said the transition will also strengthen Kenya’s early warning systems and improve the country’s capacity to respond to climate-related hazards such as floods, droughts, and severe storms.
The establishment of the Authority aligns Kenya with international best practices in meteorological governance and supports global initiatives such as the Early Warnings for All programme championed by the World Meteorological Organization.
The new Authority will provide a stronger institutional framework for delivering reliable weather forecasts, climate data, and advisory services critical for safeguarding lives, protecting infrastructure, and supporting climate-resilient development.
Stakeholders in the climate and environmental sectors have welcomed the move, noting that the new authority will enhance coordination of meteorological services and strengthen Kenya’s leadership in climate information services within the region.
The transformation of the Kenya Meteorological Department into the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority is expected to modernize operations, improve service delivery, and expand partnerships to ensure weather and climate information reaches all Kenyans.
President Ruto signs the Meteorology Act, 2023, establishing the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority as the principal technical adviser on meteorological matters

Following our recommendation, His Excellency the President @WilliamsRuto conferred to Truphena Muthoni, The Head of State Commendation (HSC) this morning at State House, Nairobi.
Later on I hosted Truphena in my office to discuss how the Ministry can work with her through mentorship, mainstreaming her work through The National Climate Action Plan( 2023 - 2027) which has a stand alone pillar on youth and children.
In line with the President's directive to support her visit to Brazil, the Ministry will work closely with her to realize this dream which will broaden her exposure to global conservation initiatives and environmental leadership.
Finally, I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate her for raising awareness on environmental conservation and climate change at nationally, globally and for the Presidential honour.
Sincere appreciation to @UNDPKenya for supporting this initiative, @PathwaysInt for facilitating the training & PS @SteveIsaboke for his visionary leadership & commitment to equipping us with the skills needed to thrive in an evolving digital landscape.

We have integrated community livelihoods into forest restoration to provide citizens with sustainable sources of income. This ensures that communities living near forests are active partners in conservation rather than contributors to degradation.
In the Mau Forest ecosystem, we are supporting 148,000 farmers to strengthen their livelihoods through 50 nature value chains.
At Sirikwa, Kuresoi North, Nakuru County, launched the Livelihoods Programme that includes distribution of tree seedlings, 10,000 pyrethrum splits, 5,000 tea seedlings, milk coolers, 50 beehives, and a last-mile connectivity initiative that will benefit more than 3,500 households.
