At @HMPEastwoodPark mothers have been using their in-cell telephony to read bedtime stories to their children.

This idea was introduced by a senior prison officer, who edited well known children’s stories into short segments for women in prison to read 📖

We took time today to celebrate both #internationalwomensday2021 and #CommonwealthDay. Our women in the workplace champions organised ‘Let’s talk’ sessions focused on the motherhood gap and menopause at work. There was amazing support for the #ChooseToChallenge campaign too

In Rutland I’m enormously relieved that we’re now down to a case rate of 95 per 100,000 thanks to the enormous hard work of @HMPStocken staff to contain & end the outbreak

Spent the afternoon with Lady Val and the rest of the judging panel deciding the winner of this years prestigious Robin Corbett Award for Prisoner Re-Integration. Great to see everyone even if it was virtual!

The PGA were just saying to Lucy Frazer last week that her tenure had been longer than most and this provided stability. We wait to meet our new Minister.

All change at @MoJGovUK as @lucyfrazermp fills in for Michael Ellis who fills in for Suella Braverman, who’s on maternity leave. It means another Minister will have to quickly get to grips with the ambitious prison building programme & the road from lockdown in jails.

A good meeting with @lucyfrazermp today; as expected C19 featured heavily along with genuine praise for all those in @hmpps. We felt that the Minister understood the challenges prisons face as we prepare for recovery. We also demonstrated the frustrations our IT gives colleagues

If prisons are safe, then rather than prisoners being in the mindset of pure survival, they will feel more able to engage. Staff will be able to flourish once again in a working environment not built on hostility and fear. A win-win.

As we move to recover from Covid in prisons, there has been much learning from the experience. We must capitalise on this and use recovery as a launch pad for a safer future for staff and prisoners in our care.

Prisoners feel safer in smaller groups so we must build a regime which follows this principle. Smaller numbers will give staff greater opportunity to build those rehabilitative relationships which we know are a key part of safety.
