We bring parents, healthcare workers and partners together to strengthen KMC community care and improve outcomes for preterm and newborn babies in Uganda.
@faith_nabushawo@PretermsUG Musawo I for one was discharged with my 7 months old and guided by badawo not to shower then but instead wipe them with a wet small towel for 3 months. Then did kangaroo method a lot esp on cold days & used to express breast milk. My baby was so tiny & delicate to lie in a basin
Hey @PretermsUg, I’d like your thoughts on this.
I recently followed up with a mother whom we delivered at 33 weeks due to an obstetric emergency. The baby was born stable, spent a few days in NICU before being discharged. When I called to check on them and remind her of the follow up clinic, she told me she hadn’t bathed the baby yet. She said she was waiting until the EDD because she believes preterm babies should not be bathed until their due date which would mean in this case no bath for about six to seven weeks.
Do you come across beliefs like this often? We clearly still need a lot of sensitization around preterm care. Thank you for the important work you do for our premies.
@faith_nabushawo Thank you for sharing this @faith_nabushawo for raising this issue
We do encounter different beliefs around preterm care, highlighting the need for continued sensitisation. Parents need clear guidance on safe bathing to prevent heat loss and protect their babies.
PIPNU is expanding to the Rwenzori Region💜
Today, we met with the team at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital to plan how we will introduce community follow-up services for preterm and very sick babies and their families across the region.
Our specialist is reminding mothers that babies with cerebral palsy need love, communication and stimulation. Talk to your baby, engage with them and respond to their needs. Even when they cannot express themselves in words, your voice, touch & attention matter.
