The @LemkinInstitute mourns the murder of 6-year-old Wadea Al-Fayoume and the grievous injury of his mother Hanaan Shahin in an act motivated by anti-Muslim hatred. It also condemns #US officials and the media for their reckless embrace of genocidal language against #Palestinians, which inflames pre-existing anti-Muslim sentiment and inspires fresh violence.

On October 2nd, 1937, the US-backed dictator of the #DominicRepublic killed 20,000 Haitians residing in the country. Inspired by ally Adolf Hitler, Rafael Trujillo used the military and conscripted civilians to target Haitians, including Haitians of Dominican descent. The genocide of Haitians in the DR is still denied to this day, a legacy of Trujillo’s deep-seated racism and commitment to cover up the horrific acts.
The @LemkinInstitute condemns this continued denial of the massacre and stands with all those affected by the genocide.
The @LemkinInstitute is horrified by the outbreak of violence in #Israel and #Palestine since October 7th, 2023. We warn world leaders that the crisis is dangerously likely to descend into the mass murder pattern of genocide and urge them to pursue foreign policy initiatives that serve both to de-escalate the situation and bring the State of Israel together with Palestinian representatives in a transformative peace process that ensures the dignity and security of all peoples in the region.
We hold leaders in the United States (alongside many other Western leaders) primarily responsible due to its withdrawal from a leadership role in a peace process while it still heavily supported Israel with weapons and other military aid. We strongly urge Western leaders to pull back from the endorsement they have given Israel to commit genocide against Palestinians, whether through massacre or through forced population displacement, lest they be complicit in genocide.
We also see genocidal dimensions in Hamas violence and the threat of large-scale genocide by the Israeli state, military and settler groups. Genocide is a crime in international law and is a permanent moral wound on the body of humanity. There is never a justification for perpetration of this crime.

'It is inconceivable to have an orderly int'l life without effective int'l guarantees of the right of existence of entire human groups..', Lemkin wrote to first @UN SG in 1947. He was asked to provide expertise for Genocide Convention.
His words remain as important today as ever.
28 years ago the Bosnian #Serb Army of Republika Srpska overran a U.N.-protected safe haven and killed at least 8,372 #Bosnians.
The Srebrenica Genocide was part of a larger #genocide intended to eliminate primarily Muslim Bosniaks after the breakdown of #Yugoslavia
The #Roman Statue which established the #International Criminal Court was adopted on 17th, July 1998.
The convention set the standards for the four major categories for international crime, I. Genocide, II. Crimes against humanity, III. War crimes, and IV. Crime of aggression.

@7Idsw3tXoz65LYi ☺️ when you search for Jan Zwartendijk you don’t find mr Sugihara and vice versa. They never met but both are honoured by Yad Vashem. Their governments didn’t like what they did. (Different times)
Researchers are questioning the story of Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara, who has been heralded for helping thousands of Jewish refugees flee Europe in 1940. https://t.co/kNrmOMrCjg
Spoke to @globalnews last week where I argued the ICC arrest warrant would put pressure on Putin not to travel to South Africa. My prediction was correct. https://t.co/ox1f3Q3BZj
