Football Mom PSA...I don't know who needs to hear this, but this message is for the young athletes out there.
The attached video gives a behind the scenes look at my son's NFL team during his draft process. Their focus on his character is a point of emphasis that struck me the most.
Players, please be aware that these teams want more than just your athletic talent on the field. Your character also matters a great deal. Btw, this can be applied to any level & not just the NFL. Donโt get me wrong; I'm not saying you have to be perfect. I also realize that lots of great athletes who are also "good guys" go unselected every year. However, I implore you, don't be one of the ones sitting at home because you have a history of making bad decisions & poor choices. I've personally witnessed this on numerous occasions, and it's very unfortunate. It is also something that can be avoided.
If you're a young athlete who desires to play at the next level (HS, college or pro), be smart and be the best version of you. Get away from people who aren't being productive. Those individuals will only bring you down. Be a difference maker on your team regardless of the role you play. Remember, NONE of us are perfect, BUT we should all strive to better ourselves & our surroundings daily.
My son was very blessed to hear his name called on draft day. He doesn't take it for granted & he understands that many others were also deserving of that call. However, just getting there was only part of the goal. Making the team, and helping the team find success in anyway possible is truly the ultimate prize. Again, I repeat, always make sure you are helping to better any organization that you're a part of.
The Jacksonville Jaguars saw something they liked in my son. They call it "Duval DNA". Your school or org may call it something else. As an athlete and as a person, your ability to walk with integrity and do the right thing is something you alone can control. Don't wait for others to tell you to go above and beyond when you can take the initiative and set the tone yourself.
Lastly, I pray blessings in your journey and encourage you to trust God throughout the processโ๏ธ. Stay focused, disciplined, teachable and above all have fun on your athletic adventure!
