#UPDATE: Fighting Continues in Baidoa; Deputy Prison Chief Reported Killed
Fighting that began at about 4:50 a.m. continued in Baidoa on Monday between Darawish forces loyal to Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen and federal forces supporting the administration led by Aden Madobe, according to local security sources .
Adan Macalin Nuurow, deputy head of Baidoa Central Prison, was reported killed.
Federal forces backing Madobe said they had shot down a drone they described as a suicide drone launched by Laftagareen-aligned forces. The claim could not be independently verified. Reports that drones are being used by both sides would mark a new escalation in the fighting and the first reported use of drones in urban clashes in Baidoa.
Earlier reports said Laftagareen-aligned forces had advanced into parts of the city, with one official in their administration saying they were in downtown Baidoa.
Residents reported electricity outages during the clashes. Baidoa Regional Hospital said 10 civilians had been injured, according to information provided earlier in the day;
Security sources also reported that Ethiopian troops had closed roads leading to the presidential palace, where Madobe was said to be staying. Reports that federal authorities had urged African Union forces in Baidoa, including Ethiopian troops, to join the fighting had not been confirmed.
A vehicle supplied by Turkey to the federal government was also reported damaged.
The fighting is unfolding amid a wider dispute over control of Southwest State between the federal government and Laftagareen, who resigned after federal forces took control of Baidoa in March.
