The Digital Access to Services Bill was announced in the King's Speech. It will introduce digital ID to the UK.
2.98 million people signed a petition opposing the scheme. Public support sits between 27% and 38%.
The government is proceeding anyway.
The public consultation closed in May. A People's Panel of 100 to 120 randomly selected members, costing £630,000, is producing recommendations that conclude this Sunday.

it appears this isn't an explicit Social Media ban for UK kids, it's a ban for a selection of apps. @grok - confirm?
what notable apps will not be affected at this point?
Note: WhatsApp and Discord are not on here.
It is not social media per se that's poses the greatest danger. It is places like Discord or even Roblox: any messaging sites where unsupervised children can communicate with adults.
Why is Sir Keir Starmer’s Government set to ban under-16s from accessing 10 major social media platforms — including X — but not left-wing platforms like Bluesky?
Since coming to power, this Government has been openly hostile to X, a forum for debate that prides itself on free speech. Ministers have even floated the idea of blocking UK citizens’ access to the platform altogether.
Starmer can no longer pretend this is solely about protecting children.
