The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints church should ask the youth entirely different temple questions.

Below are my new proposed questions and the reasoning for why:

The Why

I sat in on my 12-year-old daughter’s temple recommend interview this week.

I didn’t think it would be a big deal but the experience didn’t sit well with me at all.

On the questions asking her if she believes in the prophet and the church and the restoration, and asking if she associated with any group against the church and if she’s paying her tithing.

Do you really think a 12-year-old has had enough life experience to make that kind of declaration?

The Word of Wisdom and the law of chastity. This goes without saying. These concepts, at her age, should be taught by parents in an age-appropriate way, not by an unrelated adult man in a private interview.

You shouldn’t even ask these questions at all. Especially the last one.

If you’re in a bishopric, please just don’t ask these questions.

lt is all undue pressure. It feels like grooming compliance and brainwashing.

Forcing her to say yes to questions she has no business really understanding also causes her to feel needless guilt if she doesn’t believe the right way.

At 12, kids should be encouraged to be good people instead of being pressured to comply and believe.

The interview is a pressure cooker for a kid making them feel forced to profess beliefs they aren’t old enough to fully understand.

My daughter told me after she was just going to say yes to everything. So sometimes these questions force them to lie so they can go to the temple and not feel shame among friends at church.

The temple recommend interview for children should be about kindness, honesty, and desire to serve, not adult-level worthiness standards.

Here’s what I propose instead:

1️⃣ Do you want to go to the temple to help your ancestors and others who have died receive baptism?

2️⃣ Do you try to be kind to others and treat them with respect?

3️⃣ Do you try to be honest in what you say and do?

4️⃣ Do you try to follow Jesus Christ’s example of loving your neighbor?

5️⃣ Do you feel good about going to the temple and being part of this experience?

6️⃣ Do you feel safe and comfortable talking about your beliefs with your family and leaders?

That’s it. No pressure. No heavy-handed doctrine. Just encouraging a child to be good and making sure they feel safe in their faith journey.
