Their role in rebuilding their country is vital. Our confidence in potential partnership depends on their leadership of it.
Rayan, Alya, Zainab, Jamila, Heba must be heard. Their courage and dignity must be recognised.
Some Syrian friends in Beirut already on road to Damascus. No one ever wants to be a refugee, live in a foreign land, close or far but no one wants to live under murderous regime, risk prison or death. Friends in Damascus reporting celebrations on streets. It's 5.30 am there.
There are 50,000 pregnant Palestinian women in besieged Gaza - with 4,000 Palestinian babies expected to be delivered this month - and 'approximately 15,000 of them are likely to be on the verge of famine,' says UN Population Fund.

Wars always impact the most vulnerable first and most.
At least 70 per cent of those killed in the war in #Gaza are women and children among them girls.
The ongoing military operation in northern #Gaza for the past seven weeks has uprooted 130,000 people.
Women are being separated from men and ordered to walk with their children. Many are seeking shelter in abandoned homes and destroyed clinics or shops. Some sleep out in the open. They are scared and exposed to gender-based violence, abuse and disease.
Across Gaza, there are around 50,000 pregnant women and 4,000 deliveries expected next month. With weakened immune systems, pregnant and breastfeeding women struggle to survive amid piles of rubbish and sewage.
Menstrual hygiene has become an ordeal for most women and girls. Nearly 700,000 menstruating women don’t have sanitary pads and other hygiene supplies. They are either unavailable or too expensive: the price of a soap bar increased by 1,100%.
It’s time for a #ceasefire for the sake of women and girls. It’s time for a standard and regular flow of supplies including lifesaving hygiene material.
#16Days
In Adre today, on Chad/Sudan border.
Dire conditions here. Victims of conflict, sexual violence, extreme hunger. And international neglect.
They are us.
We need to end the era of indifference. I refuse to believe that we cannot do better.

"…Israeli and Palestinian lawyers and activists behind this initiative @2States1Homelan… are doing something rather remarkable. They seem to have pinned down not just a visionary but also a practical equation for achieving a just and lasting peace to the Middle East conflict.” - @Raad_Zeid
In light of this, watch our interview with A Land For All leaders May Pundak and @OmarMDajani exploring their innovative "two states, one homeland" confederal vision for peace ⬇️

Pregnancy & childbirth don't stop in times of crisis.
In #Sudan, 80% of hospitals are closed & 2 out of 3 people don't have access to health services. These mothers and their newborns deserve & require high quality care immediately. #BornintoCrisis

“The needs in S. Darfur are enormous. Women & their newborns are dying because they can't reach healthcare facilities in time or there are no facilities. We need more actors to come & support the health system.” - Gillian Burkhardt, @MSF Medical Activity Manager
#TalkAboutSudan
Multiple health emergencies are unfolding with little international response in South Darfur, Sudan.
Newborns, pregnant women, and new mothers are dying in alarming numbers—many from preventable causes as systems collapse.

The speech by @raad_zeid contained a wisdom and perspective that delegations to the UN need to hear more often so that they can insist the organization learn from its hard-won lessons. The final paragraph is 🔥 “the Security Council, and particularly its Permanent Members, selects the Secretary-General (while the General Assembly appoints them); the Council is therefore duty-bound to trust the Secretary-General and in the latter’s impartial and good judgement, when speaking of matters relating to peace and security. If you believe the Secretary-General is capable of it, then respect his abilities accordingly, mandate and send him, listen to him and then respond to the crisis accordingly.”
Sunday marks six years since the passing of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who has been regarded by so many as a guiding force for good.
Today and every day, we remember him. https://t.co/GUtWrh157v
Women in countries affected by #conflict are 3x more likely to go w/o a skilled birth attendant & 3x more likely to give birth outside of a health facility - heightening the risk of poor maternal and newborn health outcomes. #BornIntoCrisis@save_children
