Israel has begun a large scale operation in the Qalandiya refugee camp, located between Ramallah and Jerusalem. The operation is clearly designed to destroy the camp, which houses 19,000 residents:

1) They have so far stayed all day and brought in a very large presence for such a small camp. More than 30 military vehicles and 10 bulldozers, designed to hold and destroy.

2) The strategic points were taken and snipers deployed all over. Roads were closed and movement restricted.

3) The nearby village of Kafr Aqab was occupied too, and a full curfew was imposed, residents kept indoors under threat of arms.

4) Residents were thrown out of their homes and were taken over by the IDF and converted the buildings into military posts and field interrogation centers.

5) Several buildings have been demolished, including a car wash and several others. The level is not yet what was seen in Jenin or Tulkarm.

6) Many were arrested including Ghassan al-Khatib; Kifah Hamad, 43, who had a prior leg fracture; and the father of Laith al-Shuani, killed earlier. They were interrogated harshly in the field and then taken away to facilities.

It is important to note that the IDF command does not believe there is a serious security threat from Qalandiya. It is likely being taken as part of the wider ethnic cleansing campaign.
