JRD Tata loses a pen!

JRD Tata, then Chairman of the Tata group, and senior Tata Directors used to meet for lunch at Bombay House (the Tata Group's headquarters) every day. One day, JRD came to lunch, sad that he had lost his favourite pen. He used to always carry a Parker pen set - a fountain pen and a ball pen.

"Look", he said sadly, "I have lost the ball pen. I don't know where it has gone. I have looked all over...but it's gone."

One of the Directors in the lunch room that day was Dr. Jamshed (JJ) Irani of Tata Steel. He made note of JRD Tata's loss. A few weeks later, when he was visiting London, he went to a small shop near Selfridges specialising in pens, and found a ball pen identical to the one JRD had lost. He bought it immediately. The next time he met JRD Tata, he presented that pen to him.

JRD was delighted. "Yes, Jamshed, it is exactly like the one I lost." For the first one or two minutes, he used it and tried it out. Then, Dr. Irani saw JRD's expression change slowly.

After a couple of minutes, he gave the ball pen back to Dr. Irani, and said - "Thank you for the thought. This is exactly what I wanted, but I cannot accept it."

"Why?" asked Dr. Irani, "I thought you were looking for this."

JRD answered - "Yes, Jamshed. But it is a principle of mine not to accept any gifts from any of my colleagues at work. If I did, then I know my colleagues would try to outdo each other and give me exorbitant gifts."

Dr. Irani tried to persuade him. "But Sir, nobody would know that I have given you this pen. You can say that you found it in your room. I am not going to go around saying that I have given JRD an identical pen."

JRD responded - "Jamshed, I know you will not do any such thing. But I would know. I would know that I accepted this gift against my principles. I am sorry, but I cannot accept it."

Each of us decides the principles by which we lead our lives. The principles that we will stand by, even if no one is looking or speaking about them. The principles that define who we really are. This story of JRD Tata's lost ball pen can help us reflect on what our own life's principles are. #Tata #ethics

Are foreigners allowed to do anything in India? For a photoshoot, Julia Buruleva reportedly painted an elephant pink in Jaipur. Would this be allowed under law in any other country?

At times it genuinely feels like rules here exist only for the common man, while others get away with anything. This double standard needs to be questioned.

Van Gogh died broke because nobody wanted his paintings. He sold maybe one during his entire life. The art world thought his style was too immature. His brother Theo, an art dealer, kept him alive by sending money constantly.

When Van Gogh passed in 1890, his brother, Theo died just six months later. That left Theo's wife Jo as a 28 year old widow with a baby and about 900 paintings nobody wanted, plus hundreds of letters.

Here's what actually mattered. Van Gogh had written hundred of letters letters to Theo and Jo explaining individual paintings and his life as an artist. He told them the stories behind each work, what he was trying to express, what each one meant to him.

After both brothers died, Jo remembered these letters and published them.

That's what made him famous. People could read Van Gogh's own words about each painting. The works stopped being random art and became stories he had experienced. The paintings got context directly from him explaining what he was doing. Jo gave the world Van Gogh's voice attached to his work.

By the time she died in 1925, he had gone from total unknown to art historical icon.

Should unit holders of a mutual fund pay for the legal costs of the AMC if it wages a battle of governance in one of the investee companies?

✅Quantum Asset Management Co Ltd (of Quantum mutual fund) has taken ICICI Banking group to court (NCLT). The AMC does not agree with the share swap ratio offered by ICICI Securities and ICICI Bank. It feels that ICICI Securities is worth much more than what official valuations suggest.

✅Quantum AMC says investors of ICICI Securities are short-changed. Quantum MF has investments in ICICI Securities and ICICI Bank.

✅Ajit Dayal (founder of Quantum Advisors; the sponsor of Quantum MF) says investors of Quantum MF should pay since the AMC is fighting on their behalf.

✅Some others say, don't charge; show your goodwill.
