Hello there ! Otters peeping out of the waters at Panavadi in Tamil Nadu are here to make your Monday as fascinating as they are ! Many of us don’t immediately associate otters with Indian rivers, but India is home to three species, the Smooth-coated Otter, Asian Small-clawed Otter and Eurasian Otter. They inhabit rivers, streams, wetlands, mangroves and estuaries across the country. All three are listed in Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, giving them the highest level of legal protection under the Act.
In Tamil Nadu, extensive research by A.V.C. College, Mayiladuthurai, has documented otters across an impressive range of landscapes along the Cauvery and Moyar rivers, the Bhavani system and the Vellar estuary, and in landscapes including Mudumalai, Sathyamangalam, Anamalai and Kalakkad-Mundanthurai.
And you know what ? Otters are regarded as sentinels of healthy rivers. Where otters thrive, it is a sign of a healthy, living aquatic ecosystem. What a wonderful species to discover a little more about at the beginning of a new week !

This is what freedom looks like 🇮🇳 An elephant sleeping blissfully in the wild, while the trees dance with the wind. May we always be a land where the wild can dream in freedom. Happy Independence Day, India.

Look closely, there is an elephant on that steep hill. Many people imagine elephants as animals of the plains. But the truth is far more fascinating. Asian elephants are remarkably sure-footed and can negotiate surprisingly steep hills and rocky slopes.
This photograph captures an elephant making its way across a steep hillside in the Nilgiris. And now, researchers have documented wild elephants in Arunachal Pradesh at an astonishing 3,266 metres above sea level, the highest elevation ever recorded for Asian elephants. This remarkable discovery reveals the extraordinary adaptability of these gentle giants and challenges one of the most enduring assumptions about them.
What a fascinating fact to learn on the eve of #WorldElephantDay2026, celebrated on 12 August!

Some stories are written in books. Others are written across forests, rivers and generations. The story of India's elephants is one such story.
Let’s continue to protect it with care, commitment and compassion.

On #WorldElephantDay let me introduce Gajraj and Teesta Rani. Both were rescued as a last resort when they lost their families.
Now under our care. And they often collect their toll taxes from me. One such moment.
From entertaining hearts to leading the state… some journeys are truly EXTRAORDINARY.
