Films are incredibly expensive to make. AI makes things cheaper.
The question is how far it goes.
Script breakdowns for locations? Fine.
Storyboarding? Not good if AI is choosing camera placement,
Special effects? Fine.
Actors? Not good.
Scripts? Worst case scenario.
Martin Scorsese is backing an AI company to “push the bounds of creativity to create deeper and richer experiences for audiences.” He is using the technology for storyboarding purposes.
"I’m interested in the intersection of technology and storytelling, and seeing how that can push the bounds of creativity to create deeper and richer experiences for audiences. Cinema is a young medium, only around 125 years old, so we have to be open to how it can evolve. I utilized 3D with ‘Hugo’ and de-aging technology for ‘The Irishman.’ Now, with this tool, I can share what I’m visualizing more clearly and efficiently to my creative team — the production designer, art designer, and cinematographer — for them to build on to enrich cinematic intelligence."

@Hwdgfly Very well-researched. To drive your point about the nature of these orgs even further, I'll add that the three Indie Spirit Awards for Zhao's first feature were given to her by the same organization that gave her the labs and Fast Track financing, Film Independent.
“Survival of the Richest: Hollywood’s Broken Talent Pipeline,” my exhaustively researched deep dive on Chloe Zhao, one of the industry’s most lauded filmmakers, who successfully hid her family wealth for decades, is live!

@jayson_smiley Economic class, nepotism, networks are all a factor. There will never be a completely talent-based playing field.
But people have the biggest problem with favoritism when it comes to immutable characteristics (race, sex). That's why our laws focus on that.
He’s not “a Black man” he’s a sad sack everyman who happens to be black because Chiwetel Ejiofor is a great actor who brings class to an indie project. If they’d cast a white guy you’d be complaining about the lack of diversity. No one wants to play this unwinnable game any more.
@LVon_Trier I don't want to personally attack someone I don't know. Unfortunately, he didn't offer me the same respect in our discussion.
He believes the only reason someone could be against mass institutionalized racial quotas is if they're unsuccessful.

@ProblemTomatoes@QTarantino_@Hwdgfly@sundanceorg Okay you win. You've worn me down. I'm sorry you feel so put upon as a White person and I understand it's easier to attribute your lack of success to non-White people getting something you think you deserve. My advice to you would be to stop whining and try harder or just quit
@HwoodScrptReadr@QTarantino_@Hwdgfly@sundanceorg I'm satisfied with my current job. I work with writers and see the bullshit they put up with.
You resort to insults because there is no defense for the ongoing discrimination. We both know you wouldn't pull this snarky bootstraps shit if there was a whites-only fellowship.
@HwoodScrptReadr@QTarantino_@Hwdgfly@sundanceorg "Antiwhite discrimination is fine"
"It's not happening"
"Okay, it's happening, but if it didn't happen, these opportunities wouldn't exist anyway"
"But it's not widespread"
"Okay, it's widespread, but only grants, so technically it's legal"
@HwoodScrptReadr@QTarantino_@Hwdgfly@sundanceorg Privately owned businesses must abide by the Civil Rights Act.
Yes, grants are slightly different, and from a legal perspective, the legality depends on a number of factors.
From an ethical and consistency perspective, it's still naked discrimination.
@HwoodScrptReadr@QTarantino_@Hwdgfly@sundanceorg What do you think these programs are doing?
They are artificially creating racial requirements. The requirements for these programs aren’t handed down by God.
If Netflix had a “whites only” fellowship, that’d be national news and shut down within a week.
@HwoodScrptReadr@QTarantino_@Hwdgfly@sundanceorg Furthermore, there may be X spots in a Disney writer's room.
One of those spots goes to a Disney Diversity Fellow. But if that diversity fellowship doesn't exist, the writer's room still needs to fill X spots.
In that sense, eliminating these programs does open up spots.
@HwoodScrptReadr@QTarantino_@Hwdgfly@sundanceorg I understand that. I'm saying it's wrong. I'm also saying it's illegal.
If I run a construction company and refuse to hire a black guy based on his race, the job was never going to him. It was always going to a white guy.
That's still wrong and illegal.
