📌The report “Türkiye`s Drift from Democracy towards Autocracy” examines the decline of democracy and the rule of law in Türkiye from the turn of the century to 2026. It describes a transformation in which a state that once pursued far-reaching democratic reform came to hold elections while dismantling the institutions that give elections meaning: an independent judiciary, a free press, an autonomous civil society, and the checks that hold executive power to account.
📌What began as a reform process aligned with European and international standards gave way, after 2011 and decisively after 2016, to a system that international monitors now describe as an electoral autocracy. Measured against the international human rights treaties, the violations documented in this report reveal a systemic pattern affecting the freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association, together with personal liberty, the right to a fair trial, and the right to take part in public life. 15 Temmuz - July 15 - #july15th
