It's happened with every other discontinuous technological change in human history from the Agrarian Revolution to the Industrial Revolution and now to the Information or AI Revolution.
Human Data Science will move up in abstraction layers to more creative (and important) skills.
Automation of lower layers will expand and empower data science (humans + machines) to do more important and interesting things, faster and at greater scale.
Data science will experience what every industry will experience with generative AI:
🚩Skill Biased Technical Change: Change that complements some skills but substitutes others.
The things that remain are
🚩Asking the right questions of the data
🚩Interpreting the right strategic needs of the business or policy context
🚩Communicating the ideas persuasively (especially for different audiences with different needs or perspectives)
Will this enable ChatGPT to replace human data scientists? More and more, like in most industries, the lower level aspects of data science will be automated.
