I'm excited to share that my paper "Does Meeting Style Matter" has been published in the @apsrjournal. The study leverages a school district that embedded direct response to public comment into its meeting structure.
Here's the paper and a long thread:

@JennyWarnertr For the MILLIONTH TIME: Do I want everyone to demonstrate proficiency in reading? YES! Are test scores useful? YES!
But, acting as if failing tests means you cant do ANYTHING in life is demeaning, CLASSIST, and aloof.
You do realize that standardized tests dont measure “everyday reading skills,” right? We’re talking about more advanced analytic skills: comprehension, making, inferences, comparing across passages. These people arent walking around completely illiterate. Do your homework.
@ProfJonCollins@NYCcompetence I’m pretty sure that reading is part of everyday life for every adult. You do realize that the bottom of the curve has been getting larger and lower. Meaning many many kids are not going to be able to do any of the jobs you listed.
@JennyWarnertr It’s hilarious how you people will run a report (that you clearly don’t understand) over common sense. Very few Americans are completely illiterate. Many of the people with very weak literacy skills (what you’re actually talking about) find ways to navigate society.
This is laughable. A defense of test scores (that doesn’t even address my point) from someone running a Gifted & Talented grift?? It’s a shame you dropped out. You clearly have A LOT to learn.
... looking at bad test scores and simply inferring that those students may have difficulty as adults is NOT the same as writing them off wholesale/hoping for their failure in life
never have regretted dropping out of Teachers College tbh
The Trump admin is launching an investigation into Wells Fargo over commitments the bank made over nearly a decade to increase homeownership among Black Americans https://t.co/NO8dz3ugHw
@oliviajune82 I’ll apologize for the disrespect. That’s not my character. But, you clearly misconstrued my point. I dont think kids who struggle to read have the same chances. I never said that. I never said test scores dont matter. But, you clearly have an agenda. So, have at it.
Nothing screams “I’m out of touch” more than the so-called “reformers” who act like the kids who don’t show proficiency on a state test become adults incapable of any basic functioning whatsoever. “1-3 kids aren’t proficient in reading. I hope they don’t forget to breathe” 🙄
Pretty words, but awkward: fewer than three in ten NYC public school kids are proficient in reading; two in ten in math. And they don't have rich parents to support them into adulthood like the Mayor had. Any talk about "future greatness" and children having "support and public goods" is bullshit until you fix that.
@rpondiscio@CreditFlex I don’t train teachers. Im not a curriculum & teaching professor. I train policymakers. And, I care about “poor performance.” I care even more about the people who have performed poorly. If you’re only identifying them through the scarlet letter of a test score, I’m pushing back.
I’d be offended if I didn’t expect personal attacks on my institution instead of an actual intellectual exchange, but one cannot exchange what one does not have. I’m sure his test scores were great though 😉
I’d be offended, but since this is a professor at TC and Columbia, I’d be disappointed if he didn’t see lousy student outcomes as a non-issue. They created them.
This is literally all I’m trying to say. Do we need to serve kids better? Yes. Better instruction. MORE instruction.
Do we need to raise scores? OBVIOUSLY.
But we can’t talk as if the people failing tests in the meantime are complete wastes. Everyone deserves DIGNITY.
@ProfJonCollins I had a good friend who drove truck most of his life. He left school ~10th grade.
He wouldn't have scored 'proficient' on one of these tests.
But he was much better served by school than hundreds of thousands of kids today.
@NYCcompetence Saying that people go on to live functioning lives is unserious and provocative? So, I guess, if you dont thrive on tests you cant: work at the grocery store? Fix a car? Deliver mail? Install an HVAC system? But, IM unserious?!
@CreditFlex@grok Some of us try to understand the nuances of the real world and real people instead of hiding behind “economic outcomes” and spreadsheets (which I also understand better than you)
@CreditFlex You’re making my point about being out of touch. Who says all black kids even want to be engineers or teachers? Who says all white kids even want to be that. All I’m saying is that kids who fail these tests dont just become worthless. They go on to still live lives, too.
We live in a country where the nation’s most dangerous white supremacy group in history is now, in 2026, basically saying: “….yea guys, the Vibes are Up”
The Ku Klux Klan says support for its message is growing as it seeks to rebrand around family and faith.
Al Jazeera’s @phillavelle reports on how much influence the group really has ahead of the US midterm elections.
@BamaGator1963 If that salesman was on a non-renewable 4 year contract and wasnt guaranteed to be able work in sales ever again after that 4 years….YES!! Whats so hard to understand?!?
Calipari, his assistant coaches, and staff all have the potential to earn that salary for decades. The players have a 4 year window; shorter if they get a significant injury. This is nonsense.
"I'm gonna say this, I probably shouldn't: nine of my players make more than my assistants. And the other three make more than all my staff, and we are not one of the highest payers..."
John Calipari continuing his support for Protect College Sports Act while dishing out some interesting facts on his roster. #WPS
