Professor @UniMelb | Immediate Past President, Australian Institute of Physics @ausphysics | ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics @ARC_DMPP
The ongoing decline in Year 12 physics participation highlights a critical challenge for Australia’s STEM talent pipeline and future workforce.
Total enrolments are trending down, and the gender balance is stubbornly unchanged.
The 2025 Year 12 Physics Participation Report Card, released today by @DiscoverAMSI and @ausphysics, reveals a decline in high school physics enrolments across Australia, and persistent gender gaps.

The Australian Institute of Physics is deeply concerned about declining participation in mathematics in senior secondary school, as reported today by @DiscoverAMSI. We must act now address this to underpin Australia’s economic and social future. https://t.co/s2lXsu1RQG
We would like to congratulate Nicole Bell on completing her 2-year term as @ausphysics president.
Nicole reflects on her term, the significance of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, and what is next for her. https://t.co/yxyRCSFDxu

SUPL will house dark matter experiments and other science projects that require an ultra-low radiation environment.
Thanks to SUPL Facility & Laboratory Manager, Kim Mintern-Lane, for hosting us on the trip 1km underground!
I visited the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory (SUPL @StawellLab) last week, on a field trip for members of the @ausphysics Vic branch.
Located 1 km beneath the surface in Stawell Gold Mines, SUPL is the first underground lab in the southern hemisphere!

DUNE can precisely measure the total flux of 8B solar neutrinos with NC neutrino-argon interactions.
Combined with DUNE CC measurements, this would enable a direct SNO-like CC/NC comparison to precisely measure oscillation parameters and allow unprecedented tests of new physics.
