The phrase ‘Mothers always get custody’ is common, but this is a misconception and is far from the truth. Project Lighthouse supports mothers who have endured domestic abuse and child-removal, because we understand that children do not always stay in the care of their mothers. These removals often happen on the grounds of so-called ‘Parental Alienation’, a theory used by perpetrators to continue their post-separation abuse. Mothers are accused of manipulating their children, when the reality is that they are striving to protect them from abuse.

This important article by Anna Fazackerley (X:@AnnaFazack1) in @guardian shows how the UK justice system is failing to protect mothers and children and leaves mothers with life-long trauma. Project Lighthouse picks up the pieces of this broken system, helping mothers with therapeutic support and a safe space.

Project Lighthouse has been created to support mothers enduring the effects of child removal, but we are also committed to shedding light on this often hidden issue. However, we do not have access to vital Ministry of Justice data on the number of child removals in private law cases, making it a challenge to fully explore what is happening.

Children‘s voices are lost in proceedings & harmful contact arrangements are ordered. So pleased to see @scotwomensaid focus on the harm that continues to occur in Children‘s Hearings👇👇
🚨 Child Protection Stops When Child Contact Starts. 🚨 Too often, child contact proceedings in Scotland overlook the risks posed to mothers and children who have separated themselves from their abuser. Decisions are being made in courts and Children’s Hearings that put women and children in harm’s way. Why?
⚖️ There’s a gap between criminal and civil courts, leaving domestic abuse survivors vulnerable.
📝 Social work and police reports often fail to accurately reflect the trauma and risks that abuse brings, overlooking what should be crucial protections.
🌍There’s a bias towards granting child contact to both parents, even when it goes against research and human rights standards under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
This system is dangerous for survivors of domestic abuse, forcing them into ongoing trauma instead of ensuring safety and support. Scotland must do better. It’s time to reform the approach to child contact to prioritise the safety and rights of women and children. #StillNotSafe #16Days #ChildSafetyFirst #DomesticAbuseReform
