@DanDawkins The sheer amount of money being shuffled around on a daily basis via Mr. Internet's magic moon money immediately dispels even that 1 in 14 million scenario.
NEW: Personally, it feels fitting to me that Sony, having played such a central role in the history of optical disc media, made this decision. In a way, I think it's exactly the kind of decision that only Sony could, and perhaps should, have made. https://t.co/rlo3Gkk3y4
Painfully contrived. Enthusiast media folk didn't "create" anything - the best of them have spent decades distilling earnestly held opinions of a passionate player base into something digestable.
Video games are not a charity. They aren't art you hang up in a museum. We don't have billionaire patrons who will pay $200M+ for a vanity project. These things need to be commercially viable, but too many in the Enthusiast media (influencers among them) have spent so long tearing everything down (DLC, microtransactions, loot boxes, AI, etc.) that they've created a huge rift between the economics of the industry and player expectations.
So tell me... Who is going to buy a business running at 3% contribution margin? To leave loss-making studios open? In case this gorgeous idea of AA (where everyone just says Clair Obscur and then can't say anything else) magically starts printing money? If that actually worked, everyone would already be doing it. The industry needs to reset its cost structures, and to do so, it's going to incur a lot of pain on places that don't actually make money. And y'all need to put a mirror in front of yourselves when you ask why... because you'll be staring right at a big reason. You've taken a particular glee at tearing down the industry over the past 3-5 years, and now you are surprised at what you see.
@DanDawkins Stuntman: Ignition on PS3 is quite literally one of my all-time favs, all because of its combo-linking mechanic. Insanely addictive moment to moment gameplay loop.
@ElectronShep Hey man, i ordered an Xbox adapter from you a number of years back and it has given up on me. I'd love to order another one, however I'm in Ireland. Have you an ETA on when you will resume shipping to Europe?
@oliemack If the technology wasn't having an ongoing and consistently worsening net-negative effect on creativity, the environment, the global economy, energy usage, and consumer access to consumer computing, then sure.
@RavenReverse@DanDawkins I say this as a former reviews ed. If this piece landed in my drafts, my concern would be its hyperfocus on a comparitvely tiny portion of the experience vs. wordcount and score. Additionally, the disservice it does to the real humans that did real work on the game.
@RavenReverse@DanDawkins As a reader of EG for two decades+, It's also a pretty considerable sea-change in the editorial direction of the site's reviews. Consider the human cost of dev crunch, and how intertwined it is with game dev - yet EG rarely, if ever, marks games down on that basis.
@RavenReverse@DanDawkins It's the questionable presence of the tirade itself that merits scrutiny. The writer admits that AI content makes up a small portion of the experience, yet half the piece is spent seemingly reviewing a looming ethical implication as opposed to an actual game.
