The bigger the city, the less the air on your balcony has in common with the weather forecast. It’s like measuring the average temperature across a hospital, and the analogy is a perfect one: the bigger the hospital, the more likely your own readings are to differ from the average.

Why? Any building can change how air moves and how noise travels. And in a big city, the number of local pollution sources doesn’t scale with area. On a single block you can find a bakery, a medical testing lab and a cleaning company’s office spread across three floors. Above them sit another 15 floors of every kind of human activity. At that point your health starts to depend directly on the people around you, not on the weather in the forecast.

Bangkok is Asia’s free-spirited megacity, and to me the closest real-world counterpart to Night City from Cyberpunk novel. Right in the heart of Bangkok’s concrete jungle, we ran an experiment that shows big-city residents two things: the environment around them can change dramatically within a single kilometer, and what seems obvious, like the air being worst along the city’s main artery, can turn out to be wrong.

That’s why it’s worth owning your own smart devices to study the environment around you. Not just for fun, but because you can’t take data from the internet and assume it applies to your home. Environmental differences are hyperlocal, and our Bangkok experiment proves it.
