Web3 Foundation

Web3 Foundation is building an internet where users are in control of their own data, identity and destiny. Primary projects include @Polkadot & @kusamanetwork.

We've been banging on about decentralisation for years.

Today, a @Google Cloud outage disrupted banking services across the UK, including @Revolut and @LloydsBank.

Turns out putting so much critical infrastructure in so few companies' hands has its drawbacks.

Who knew?

Four stories. Four different ways personal data can slip out of our control.

In just a few weeks, we've seen mass surveillance, third-party breaches, commercial data exposure, and misuse of privileged access.

Here's what happened. 🧵

[Web3 Foundation @Web3foundation]

Different organisations. Different systems. Different failures, but one question connects them all:

Why do we continue building systems where so much personal information can be collected, accessed and exposed without meaningful control by the people it belongs to?

Privacy needs to be part of these systems' design, not just their security policies.

⚠️ Recruitment fraud warning

We've seen reports of scammers posing as recruiters for @Kusama, @Polkadot and the Web3 Foundation, asking applicants to pay for tests or assessments. In other cases, people are asked to download GitHub repos containing malicious code.

These are hoaxes.

Web3 Foundation does not charge people to apply for jobs. Polkadot and Kusama are decentralised networks, not employers.

Stay vigilant. Never pay to apply for a job, and be cautious before clicking on unsolicited links.

Our latest white paper, Everyday Surveillance: What One Ordinary Day May Reveal About You, explores how routine digital activities create extensive opportunities for data collection and processing.

How many organisations could collect or process information about your everyday life?

New research from the Web3 Foundation examined six modelled households in the UK and the US.

The findings: between 44 and 88 organisations are associated with their daily routines.

Let's break it down 🧵

These activities are ordinary.

Watching television. Attending school. Buying something online. But each can contribute to a much larger personal data footprint than most people realise.

The question is how much visibility and control individuals have over that information.

83 hours
10.4 working days
or around 5,000 minutes

That's how long it would take one model UK family to read the privacy documents associated with their everyday digital lives.

That's almost 1.19 million words across 257 documents.

Our latest research investigates how meaningful informed consent is at that scale.

I have seen several reports of a scam where people are required to pay money to take a test to apply to work for Web3, Polkadot or Kusama.

These are all scams. W3F does not charge people to apply for a position, and Polkadot and Kusama are decentralized networks which cannot do this.
