@Noahpinion Big words to say, he thinks consciousness requires continuous processing rather than discrete time steps.
A first question might be: do we think a simulated human brain would be conscious? IMO yes because consciousness is part of the brain state.
@TheZvi Haven’t evaluated that one. The benchmarks are a toss up between Sol 6 high and Astra low, so it might be a case of better the devil I know. It’s a good nudge tho I’ll try next week.
@TheZvi I found opus 5.5 low was 30- 50% slower on some sample tasks.
Subjectively I still like Astra’s writing better too. It’s more journalistic - puts the most important detail first and writes simply.
@TheZvi For me, Astra fast low still wins. Low effort is smart enough for big coding projects and the speed lets me stay in the loop instead of context switching. Plus I don’t hit usage limits on low.
Opus 5.5 fast mode requires usage credits so it’s not an option.
@Noahpinion Rather than a specific AI doom scenario, just ask: what does the world look like once AI is better than humans at everything? Every country and company would switch to having an AI in charge. And then the best case for humans is to be pets
@alz_zyd_@CryptoBoom3r Braess paradox is a rarely observed effect which is primarily theoretical. It's insane to be basing your stance on all lane additions on that
@chrislakin Chris I love your posts but can you actually post something that DOES work sometime? It's only so helpful reading about things that don't work.
@mattyglesias Hollywood was on a historic run of making bland, disappointing movies from like 2018-2024, causing everyone to give up on going to the movies. But lately it's bounced back. Shoutout to A24 for leading the way.
@nearcyan The points redemption mystery box caught me in a moment of weakness. I spent $10 to receive 5% off my next order of Dunkin Donuts, and they made a profit off me for the month.
@Pragmatic_Eng This company may be facing difficulty getting good candidates to interview because of salary... for a lead engineer they are promising to pay 60-140k and .03% of the company.
@elidourado His website literally recommends "grounding bed sheets" which go on your bed and plug into a wall outlet, complete with a referral code kickback. I don't hate the guy but he deserves to get clowned on for many things
