And my response was always:

“If dem no promote you, you promote yourself nah.” 😂

I worked for over 14 years in the bank and was promoted only twice in 2010 and 2014.

Looking back today, I thank God I wasn’t promoted more than necessary. Maybe too many promotions would have made me comfortable enough to forget my dream. 😅

Don’t get me wrong. Promotion is good.

When you are promoted, you feel seen. You feel appreciated. You feel that all those late nights, extra responsibilities and years of hard work have finally been recognised.

But what happens when you work extremely hard and the promotion doesn’t come?

You watch other names appear on the list, but yours is missing.

Do you become bitter?

Do you stop giving your best?

Do you allow somebody else’s decision to determine how you see yourself?

That was something I refused to do.

If you knew me during my banking years, you would know that I worked extremely hard. My work was visible even to senior management.

Yet promotion would come and sometimes pass me by.

So I developed a way of protecting my mind.

I stopped building my happiness around promotion.

Whenever I got home disappointed, I would paint, work on my business, or bring out my vision and remind myself:

“Nduka, this is not your final destination.”

Then I would smile.

Because while I could not control whether the company promoted me, I could control whether I promoted my own life.

So I kept developing myself.

I kept painting.

I kept building my business.

I kept learning.

I kept preparing for the future I could see.

That became my own promotion.

There is more than one ladder in life.

Your employer has a ladder.

Your business has a ladder.

Your talent has a ladder.

Your family has a ladder.

Your personal development has a ladder.

If one ladder seems slow, don't spend your whole life standing underneath it waiting for somebody to call your name.

Keep climbing somewhere else too.

Today, I look back at those years differently.

Perhaps some of the promotions I didn't get were blessings in disguise. They kept me hungry. They kept me uncomfortable. They kept reminding me that I had another dream to pursue.

So, yes, celebrate when they promote you.

But when they don't, don't allow it to destroy your confidence.

If dem no promote you, promote yourself.

Build something.

Learn something.

Improve your craft.

Start that business.

Develop another source of income.

Become so committed to your growth that whether your name appears on somebody's promotion list or not, your life is still moving forward.

Sometimes the biggest promotion of your life will not come with a new job title.

It will come when you finally become the person you once needed permission to become.
