The mum of a Scottish girl who was publicly branded a racist after a viral video showed her holding an axe and a knife has demanded an apology from both Police Scotland and First Minister John Swinney.

For over a year, her family says they have lived through hell.

When the video first emerged, many people rushed to judgement. Politicians commented. Social media erupted. The girl, who was just 12 years old at the time, was subjected to abuse, threats and accusations.

Police and John Swinney appeared to cast doubt on her account after she claimed she had been targeted by Bulgarian man Ilia Belov and had picked up the weapons to scare him away.

Now, following court proceedings, her mother says the truth that emerged has left her family asking a simple question:

Where are the apologies?

A child was condemned in the court of public opinion before all the facts were known.

A 12-year-old girl had her name dragged through the mud.

Her family say they were left to pick up the pieces while others moved on.

If public figures, police officers and commentators were willing to speak out when the allegations were being made, should they now speak out with the same energy if they got it wrong?

Because reputations matter.

And when the person at the centre of the storm is a child, they matter even more.

Last year, a video went viral of a scared, 12 year old girl in Dundee.

She was waving weapons, shouting at a migrant to leave her alone.

Almost immediately, many on the left were calling this girl a liar (and worse). They were saying the “far-right” were whipping up ‘anti-migrant hate’.

People like @HumzaYousaf & many more called it ‘bullsh*t’.

Many, including people like @jdpoc while calling her a liar & talking about her ‘hatred’, showed pictures of the little girl. Just to make sure everyone knew who the ‘liar’ they were talking about, was.

A fundraiser for the girl was mocked, suggesting she’d use the money to buy “machetes and IronBru”

She was a child. Their posts were seen by hundreds of thousands of people.

She wasn’t ‘hate-filled’, she was scared.

Yesterday, her version of events was proven to be true. She was sexually harassed by a migrant and another child physically assaulted too.

The man and his sister were prosecuted.

How shameful that children need to arm themselves for protection.

How shameful that adults will deny their reality.

How shameful that some people are so desperate to defend migration into this country, that they will literally mock children who are victims of their crimes.

Shame on you all.

I’ll be fascinated to see how many of you publicly apologise to the girl, in the same public way that you called her a liar.

I won’t hold my breath…

Two days after Henry died Hampshire Police secretly recorded Digwa in a police van speaking Punjabi to his brother. Digwa admitted stabbing Henry. Discussed claiming self defence. Made zero mention of racial abuse. Not one word.

Hampshire Police had that tape.

They knew Digwa was lying about the racist attack. They had the evidence. They had his own words and then tried to smear Henry as the aggressor anyway.

Three days after his death their statement read “it was reported two men had been assaulted by an unknown man.” Henry was the unknown man. The boy bleeding out on the street. They flipped it.

Family complained. Statement changed. Then police told the family their NEXT update would again infer Henry was the initial aggressor. His family had to fight them a second time. While grieving their murdered son.

Then during the trial Hampshire tried to issue a statement telling the public to stop talking about it online. Calling it disinformation. The CPS had to step in. Told them they were about to collapse their own murder case.

This is the force that handcuffed a dying boy. Missed the murder weapon twice. Had a secret tape proving the killer lied. And still tried to bury Henry's name.

That's not incompetence. That's a machine protecting itself. At the expense of a dead boy's reputation and three officers are still on active duty. Not suspended. Treated as witnesses. To their own actions.

Hampshire Police didn't just fail Henry on that street. They kept failing him for six months after he died.
