Rural housing, tap-water connectivity and digital financial inclusion have risen substantially.
These are not arguments that the BJP is infallible. These are arguments that its agenda contains a substantial focus on infrastructure, digitalisation, formalisation, welfare and state capacity.
A proper rebuttal would therefore go beyond vote-bank politics and propaganda.
And the same standard should be applied to Congress, AAP, TMC, DMK and every other party.

Education and welfare are not mutually exclusive. There is no need for a government to choose between building schools and protecting its population from sliding into poverty due to disease, unemployment, or other factors.
The correct question to ask is not why welfare and not education. but ,Is the government using its funds in a way that will best serve the citizens’ welfare in the short and long term ?
The answer will most likely involve both welfare and education as viable options. Targeted welfare can afford people an opportunity to re-enter the workforce, gain new skills, obtain a home, and re-establish themselves. Education, of course, is an option that leads directly out of poverty for the masses. The two are not mutually exclusive and can operate concurrently.
It is right for taxpayers to demand that the government not waste their hard-earned money on frivolous handouts. It is also correct to oppose unwarranted social welfare programs.
However, it is wrong to conflate the two and say that any social welfare expenditure is a gift to the undeserving poor. Taxpayers should demand value for their money, better welfare, and better education. They should not accept the status quo and the patronizing attitude of those in power that would have them believe that anything given to the destitute is a gift.
