Today I met with Nick Pietrowicz, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy to Moldova. We discussed strengthening our cooperation, ongoing projects, and opportunities for development. I expressed my gratitude to 🇺🇸 for support in implementation of several projects in Moldova.
What we’ve seen today at the S&D Willy Brandt enlargement conference fills us with pride and gives us confidence — so much engagement, shared values, and such a vibrant conversation.
In the end, it is people who make the difference, and we see a generation that can make enlargement happen.
And us, in the EU, we have a great responsibility to take leadership and ensure that public opinion is on board.
Today, we are energised with hope and vision.
This is what we need in these dire times — and together, we can do it!
From the European Parliament: the European future of Republic of Moldova depends on real reforms, credible institutions, and public trust — not political slogans.
Today, discussing EU enlargement and Moldova’s European path. European Union
Moldova is dropping in the World Justice Project Rule of Law Index: from 64th to 68th place. Fewer results, more promises. Exactly the opposite of the “European standards” that are talked about every day. https://t.co/PbHgT1S0mW
@sandumaiamd transformed Moldova into a hybrid regime.
The Varieties of Democracy Institute now classifies it as a “hybrid regime” — same category as during oligarch Plahotniuc.
Under @sandumaiamd , despite pro-EU promises.
Europe is a standard — not a slogan
Spoke from the heart today in front of Parliament, alongside colleagues from MAN party.
People face huge bills, water crises, rising fuel prices — while the Moldovan government only “monitors” and do nothing.
This is not about politics. It’s about people left alone.
100,000+ people have been left for few days without water in Republic of Moldova after russian atacks on Ukraine.
And the government? Silent. They control the narrative, but they can’t ensure water for people.
Laws, speeches, PR—useless when basic needs collapse.
This deserves attention.
In Moldova, the law was changed to fit a political outcome. The ruling majority lowered the voting threshold to appoint a specific individual—through an unrelated amendment.
Information is tightly controlled. I will continue to share facts.
The governing party PAS could not muster the 61 votes required by law to appoint its candidate to the vetting commission.
They amended the law yesterday, lowering the threshold to 51 votes.
President @sandumaiamd promulgated the law within an hour. Today they are voting again.
Failed to get 61 votes?
Just change the rules to 51.
This is exactly what Moldova’s ruling party is doing to push through the appointment of Herman von Hebel after the opposition refused support. When laws are rewritten to secure votes, democratic safeguards become meaningless.
I have condemned the war in Ukraine, Russia’s aggression, and Chisinau remains the authority that continues caring for people within our municipality. Officially, over 54000 are registered, but unofficially over 100.000 Ukrainian citizens are temporarily settled in Chisinau.

Behind the scenes of Mayor @IonCeban16 meeting with the #EU Ambassador, @IwonaPiorkoEU Piórko. TChișinău is implementing many impactful projects with EU the support - in energy efficiency, road infrastructure, waste management, and more. We are building Europe here, at home.
Up to 30 kindergartens across Chișinău are set to become more energy-efficient thanks to our work with the @E5PFund, @SweMFA, @EUinMoldova.
Part of #EBRDGreenCities, the project combines loans and grants to make public buildings greener, warmer and more inspiring places to grow.
🔴 Moldova receives a “red card” on fundamental rights. The European Committee of Social Rights’ report presents a clear diagnosis of systemic governance failure. While authorities speak of “European values,” the data shows the state is failing to protect its people.
A Moldovan-born young man who served in the army was declared stateless by his own state. This is what happens when laws are rushed. PAS voted 70 laws in one day, rewrote rules to bring in prosecutors, then pushed Drăgălin out, and passed laws that freed criminals.
President @sandumaiamd sues citizens for criticism and pressures journalists for asking tough questions. That’s not democracy — that’s intimidation.
Freedom of expression must be non-negotiable in Moldova. 🇲🇩
Today w/ National Alternative Movement Party: we demand fair energy tariffs. PAS once protested here “affordable prices” — now they’re silent while people pay record bills. We launch “Pay it yourself!” send us your energy bills so decision-makers see the real reality.
