So, #Sardar2 has been watched.

The best thing about spy dramas is that they can be coupled with a multitude of genres. From romance to survival thrillers, and conversational dramas to mass masala, a spy film can disguise itself as anything. Director #PSMithran loves reminding his audience that we have just one world, and we are forgetting that the resources being used today aren't inherited from our ancestors but stolen from our children. As much as he likes to entertain, he also wants to inform. And he takes his favourite route this time, too: Use an interesting villain to instill fear in your minds. From Arjun in Irumbuthirai to #SJSuryah in Sardar 2, Mithran's villains have always had one thing in mind: Educate people.

Why use fear as the tool for this education? Because when reason isn't being reasoned with, then... fear is the strongest currency. However, the film, which dials up an all-important fear, brings it a bit too late into the narrative. Before the film addresses this 'core' malaise in society, it uses one spy trope after another.

Now, I'm not saying this isn't engaging or even entertaining, but we are made to wait a bit too long for the other shoe to drop.

Anyway, while, just like the first film, the titular character comes to the fore just before the interval block, the sequel goes into more Vikram territory on this front. As in, the shadow of Sardar looms much larger through the first half. Since we are already acquainted with the younger #Karthi's world, Mithran and team don't waste time establishing the RAW agents in the film. It dives straight into a high-stakes narrative featuring hidden tunnels under heritage buildings, old-school gadgets that still work in today's fast-paced world, ornate keys unlocking World War-era weapons, and secrets surfacing at the most opportune times.

Now, we are in a post-Dhurandhar world, and spy thrillers are expected to have a certain look and feel. But Sardar isn't cut from the same cloth, and revels in its campy realism. The fear is real, but the mongering is campy. In fact, Mithran and team take easier routes to explain its core concepts. While I wasn't truly convinced by these routes, which seemed uncharacteristic, they were also distracting. Yes, some throwaway lines made me smile, but the sequence pulled me away from the film for a while. However, that is where we learn about the issue Sardar 2 deals with. While I wasn't sold by the means, the end goal stirred my conscience because it definitely left me thinking about a habit that shouldn't have become one.

Karthi and SJ Suryah play off each other, and they hold the fort with consummate ease. Sardar stands much taller than Viji, and that weighs against the film because certain emotions don't have the intended impact. But the play between Sardar and SJ Suryah's Yogi has a lot more going for it, and both of them ensure there is never a dull moment between them. Also, points to Mithran for introducing two strong women into the narrative. I liked that #MalavikaMohanan's character doesn't really have a backstory or a clear reason for being the way she is. Even her identity is never too pronounced, and as a senior agent, she holds most of the cards. Similarly, Ashika Ranganath isn't just a damsel in distress, even though the scenario essentially makes her one. She is important to the narrative. Probably why, when there are certain slips with respect to these characters' arcs, you feel a sense of disappointment.

Also, I liked the urgency in the stunt sequences, and the elaborate set pieces that thrive on a classic case of one-upmanship. Be it that flight sequence or the one in the fort, it is interesting how the villain is always one step ahead, and the stakes increase with every stunt set piece. I'd have preferred if the climax had a bit more punch to the gut and pulled me to the edge of my seat. It needed to be more compelling. But I quite liked how the film tells a story even through its stunts. I know many have said this already, and I don't want to pile on... But the film needed a memorable soundtrack to keep the adrenaline pumping. The screenplay and the visuals wage a lone battle on this front.

I know this might seem ironic, but this is a spy drama that would have benefitted from a bit more melodrama for us to be convinced of the love, the loss, the longing, the betrayal, etc., but as it stands, Sardar 2 is a decent addition to this spy franchise that has a national hero trying his best to save India from one megalomaniac after another. It might blame multiple neighbouring and not-so-neighbouring countries for waging indirect wars against our country, but this franchise goes on to say just one thing, again and again...

Before twisting a bottle cap open or cracking a tablet strip open, remember one thing... Your future is in your hands. No country or spy can save you if you don't decide to save yourself...
