🚁💧 SUCCESS STORY: Years of Preparation Paid Off When It Mattered Most
In 2021, South Lake County Fire Protection District launched an initiative to strategically place helicopter dip tanks in South Lake County, ensuring firefighting aircraft would have immediate access to water during wildfire emergencies.
With support from local property owners, the Callayomi County Water District, Cobb Area County Water District, the South Lake County Fire Sirens Auxiliary Group, and numerous community partners, two helicopter dip tanks were installed and placed into service in August 2022, one in Cobb and one in Middletown.
Last Sunday, all of that was put to the test with the start of the Clara Fire.
The Clara Fire ignited just a few hundred feet from the Middletown Helopod, immediately threatening homes and apartments, the Middletown Elementary School along with other critical community infrastructure. Within minutes, the CAL FIRE HAWK helicopter from Boggs Mountain Helitack was able to utilize the strategically located dip tank, providing rapid access to water and supporting aggressive initial attack efforts.
The result: the fire was quickly contained before it could cause greater damage to lives, property, and the community.
The Middletown dip tank was positioned near critical infrastructure, values at risk, and an existing hydrant, with a Memorandum of Understanding in place with a local landowner who generously hosted the project and wishes to remain anonymous. Connected by permanent UV-resistant fire hose and maintained through ongoing partnerships, the tank was ready exactly when it was needed.
Assistant Chief Paul Duncan reflected on the success of the program, stating, “The incident highlighted how collaboration and preparation can make a huge difference in the outcome of a significant event. Special thank you to the Fire Sirens, who, without their support, this program would not exist.”
This success demonstrates the power of pre-planning, community partnerships, preparedness, and vigilance. What stood quietly on watch for nearly four years became a critical firefighting resource when seconds counted.
A sincere thank you to: ✅ The landowner ✅ Callayomi County Water District ✅ Cobb Area County Water District ✅ South Lake County Fire Sirens Auxiliary Group ✅ Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District ✅ CAL FIRE and Boggs Mountain Helitack ✅ The firefighters, dispatchers, and community members who help keep South Lake County safe.

@FirePhotoGirl Awesome quality and action, you really capture what is happening during the Fire Fight! If a fire breaks out near Idyllwild, I hope it's you are capturing the shots of the FireHawks hover filling on the HeloPod with Night

@OCFireAuthority "It Takes Water To Fight Fire" Installing a mobile #HeloPod brings the open water source to the remote dry areas. The Laguna Beach HeloPod was only 3/4 miles away from Coastal Fire and used 153 times in 1 1/2 days. The HeloPod maximize effectiveness of #QFR & #wildfire response!
Speed, force, and volume when it comes to dropping water on wildfires is paramount. Today, we introduced a dedicated helicopter water source, strategically located at the Quest Diagnostics facility along the Ortega Highway Corridor, which will support that.
This HeloPod will maximize the number of gallons dropped Per Hour!! Which will protect 15,000 Acres / 5 mile radius in the very dry brush filled region. Increased # of Helicopter Dip Sites Hardens the Community & enhances the effectiveness of responding helicopters "Cycle Time"
This HeloPod is the result of the support of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, Quest Diagnostics, and the Santa Margarita Water District. We are grateful for our partners who continue to support us in mitigating the wildfire threat in our communities and around California.
@FirePhotoGirl You caught an Inferno and Ocean waves and currents in Sky with one shot. Great shot of Gods awesome Canvas!
Thanks for sharing... Great Eye
@larryelder I think there was song written about this sutuation... maybe by Jason Aldean. That's what happens when you bring boys especially Woke boys to fight men, men anchored in Freedom and defending this Country. Thanks for leading the way showing us what bravery and resolve looks like!
@calwater@EPA Congrats! PumpPodUSA is proud to have assisted Cal Water with establishing water efficiency in the Fire Service. Using Rebates they've funded technology, the "DRAFTS Unit" by @PumpPodUSA_Dir to recirculate their "Training Water" saving up to 8 Million gallons each year/each unit.
