Something I've always regretted about Udemy is the discount branding. We discounted Udemy to the point where people often waited until our 90% off sales. Ugh.

Yet, today we decided to run a "Maven Monday" campaign with a curated list of our top courses, and a discount as well. Definitely nervous, especially after reading @ankurnagpal's (founder of Teachable) tweet thread (https://t.co/69hiWmw6Hg)

At Udemy, the discounting tactic led to price inflation by our instructors, which led to a lack of trust in Udemy's marketing.

Yet, today Udemy is a $2.3B company - bigger by revenue than our primary competitors Udacity or Coursera. Clearly there was some wisdom in the strategy. Also, I'll add that nearly every Teachable course instructor I follow discounts their courses... :)

With Maven, I relished the opportunity for a branding do-over. I started the company thinking I could go in the exact opposite direction: zig where Udemy zagged.

It didn't work. In fact, there were multiple early Maven decisions that I had to reverse because they fundamentally violated the laws of the online learning industry. I call these laws "business physics" - the inimitable rules that underly an industry.

My view is that discounting is an expectation of a reward and that all the other rewards Ankur mentions in his post don't really work. This is particularly true for "product" or "transaction" companies where you have high margins and low urgency for purchase.

After all, even Apple does "The Apple Store Shopping Event" during the Black Friday - Cyber Monday season.

As Ankur predicted, the short-term win is working. I'm very curious to see the long-term effect and I'll report back when I've got some conclusions.
