@Steven_Swinford If Burnham caves on this he'll look incredibly weak, it will be an invitation for back benchers to keep bullying him. He needs to knock that on the head from the beginning.
Peter Murrell has now been exposed as a thief.
However, this SNP scandal exposes deep rot at the heart of the Scottish establishment and a chain of events that ultimately led to the untimely death of Alex Salmond.

Connor nails it here. I made a speech tonight welcoming the Immigration & Asylum Bill. It brings meaningful change to our Asylum system, making it fairer & removing loopholes.
The Tories claim to want to fix the system they broke, whilst trying to kill a bill that would do this.
EXCL: Keir Starmer has become first UK PM to be presented with Légion d’honneur by French president, in recognition of his work on security of Europe.
Emmanuel Macron awarded the historic honour to Starmer for his l'ship in setting up coalition of the willing at a critical moment for the continent in early 2025.
Only other British PM to receive a similar award – at a higher level, the Grand-Croix of the Légion d’honneur – was Winston Churchill in 1958 in recognition of his leadership during the second world war.

The Hillsborough Law will do more to fight the "establishment" and bring more equity to the common man than anything Reform will ever put out in policy.
Boris Johnson’s govt wasted £10bn of public PPE during the coronavirus pandemic, official inquiry concludes.
Covid-19 inquiry chair, Heather Hallett, also criticised then Conservative govt's controversial “VIP lane” which gave high priority for PPE contracts to firms with political links to the Tories.

Elected representatives – including Cabinet members – not only attended this demonstration, but gave speeches from the platform. What sort of message does that send to the women of Hackney who want their right to single-sex spaces respected?
Using an effigy of the likely incoming Prime Minister as a target for darts goes far beyond legitimate political protest: it normalises intimidation, glorifies hostility towards political opponents, and debases our democratic culture.
Women deserve elected representatives who will focus on protecting their rights and safety, not endorsing demonstrations that trivialise political violence.

Personal news; after over four years working in Ukraine as a freelance journalist and security analyst and working for many different and excellent publications I’m happy to announce I’ve now joined the Kyiv Independent as a special correspondent.
Think it's worth repeating. Zia Yusuf claimed no state support was being offered to Reform MPs for protection. In reality, Nigel Farage was offered a car, a trained driver, a bodyguard, and security on a similar level to that offered Kemi Badenoch. That's quite the deception.
Hackney residents deserve better than representatives who choose to stand alongside protests where violent performances targeting @andyburnhamHQ take place @thetimes

I’m in Paris for my final meeting of the Coalition of the Willing.
I’m proud to have worked with @EmmanuelMacron to bring 25 nations together, united in support of Ukraine and European security.
Today, we stand stronger than ever.
Our message remains clear: Ukraine's security is our security.

.@TerrorismPolice are leading an investigation into a credible threat to those attending the UK Ijtima festival this weekend.
I thank Suffolk Police, Counter Terrorism Policing, and the organisers for their swift and effective response that undoubtably saved lives. Twelve individuals have now been arrested.
I know this is deeply concerning news for British Muslims.
We must stand against hatred and we must unite around our shared belief in a country that is open, generous and tolerant to all our communities.
1/ As someone who has been in a few murder trials let me just try to explain why the police always ask people not to speculate, (with the caveat that I understand everyone is justifiably angry, saddened and horrified).
Murder investigations and trials are very fragile things.
Amnesty really messed up here. They made false accusations about a bunch of women's rights and gay rights organisations. They really ought to apologise.
We have also written to @amnesty about our inclusion in their recent report ⬇️
Re: Amnesty International UK publication “A Growing Threat – The Anti Rights Movement in the UK”
Dear Ms Moscogiuri, Ms Horton and Mr Ruthven,
Seen in Journalism is a network of journalists and content makers committed to restoring accuracy and impartiality in reporting on sex and gender.
We are writing regarding your publication A Growing Threat – The Anti Rights Movement in the UK, released on 8 July 2026 and removed shortly afterwards.
Your report wrongly labelled several UK organisations, including Seen In Journalism, as “anti rights”, and linked gender critical groups to misogyny, homophobia, and anti-abortion activism.
These claims are inaccurate, misleading and seriously harmful.
Seen in Journalism has never opposed the rights of women, LGB people, or even those who identify as transgender. Nor have we ever campaigned on abortion. Presenting us as part of an “anti rights” movement misinforms the public and damages our reputation.
The report also described organisations supporting parents, detransitioners and young people as engaging in “conversion practices”.
This is a serious allegation presented without evidence.
Given Amnesty International’s influence, these mischaracterisations carry weight.
We demand that Amnesty issue a clear public apology and correction addressing the false statements made about Seen in Journalism and other groups.
We would appreciate confirmation that this matter is being formally reviewed.
Errr did I just hear correctly.
@KarlTurnerMP just said on @LBC that “Andy Burnham was texting and calling me DAILY for a year, telling me to carry on opposing right to jury trials, pushing me to oppose @DavidLammy reforms”

This week Kyiv was hit by missiles & Irish politicians are STILL defending the refinery supplying Russia’s war machine.
Today, another ship sailed from Ireland to Russia.
For years, the government tried to cover this up. Now the truth is coming out
