“Trans nurse charged with child abuse after premature baby found with broken bones”

Kieran L. Ansley, 43, a former NICU nurse at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, was charged in September 2026 after a premature baby girl in his care was found with fractures and bruises. He was NOT charged with rape.

Ansley, reported as a transgender man, faces two felony counts of second-degree child abuse and two misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree child abuse. Court records cited by WOOD-TV say doctors diagnosed pediatric physical abuse: broken leg bones and bruises on the hands, arms, thigh, buttocks, abdomen, and tongue.

The baby was born in November 2025 at 23 weeks, weighing 1 pound, 1 ounce.

Grandfather Robert Steavens said she had reached her due date and was about two days from going home when the injuries were found in early April. A room log showed Ansley entered 27 of 32 times overnight.

He was fired by Corewell Health. He is out on bond with an electronic tether and due back in court November 10. His lawyer says he has cooperated. These are charges, not a conviction.

A baby almost home. A nurse on the overnight shift. Broken bones. He was NOT charged with rape.
