Besides my Dad, Coach Larry Hanafin is the most impactful man in my life. Coach lost his rock, Kelly, this past weekend after 20 beautiful years.

Coach Hanafin was an unpaid assistant, who lived over an hour from the practice field. As some of you may know, passion is the foundation of how I live — Hanafin blew me out of the water.

Coach gave me The Art Of War by Sun Tzu as a graduation gift, and one of my favorite quotes from it goes:

“A leader leads by example, not by force.”

Coach was a teacher during the day, would drive 1 hour to practice *15 minutes early so the lineman had extra time for stance & starts*, coach his heart out fully sweating through one of his few hole-ridden shirts, drive 1 hour back to finally have time with his pride & joy, Kelly — remember doing all of this for free.

He’s the first coach that ever benched me, first coach that made me cry at practice. But he’s also the first coach that wanted me to be good more than I even wanted it myself. He instilled a sense of self confidence in you that is hard for me to put into words, similar to how you don’t want to let your parents down - we didn’t want to put in less than 110% and let Coach down because you knew that’s how much he was putting into you.

I got Coach Hanafin’s playing number, 55, tattoo’d alongside my late Uncle Mark, for the impact he’s had on me. On tough days I can look down & remember his mindset.

Being stuck indoors for too many straight days can create boredom or inspire some creativity where you just go full send on making it fun. @jujuthompson_ draining the bucket & @QHanafin finding a way to get bat to ball simultaneously was quite impressive.
