Nearly half of all dementia cases are entirely preventable, but standard health campaigns are failing patients, a major new study reveals.
Dementia is often feared as an inevitable consequence of aging, but groundbreaking research reveals that up to 45 percent of cases could actually be prevented or delayed.
These findings, stemming from a major international review published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity, highlight 14 modifiable risk factors within our control—including physical inactivity, social isolation, smoking, and hearing loss.
However, scientists warn that traditional public health campaigns are falling short. Simply telling people about these risks rarely leads to lasting lifestyle changes, prompting a call for highly personalized, interactive, and community-driven health programs.
To make prevention more effective, a companion decade-long study tracking nearly 500,000 adults offers a practical target: muscle strength. The research showed that individuals with "sarcopenic obesity"—a combination of low muscle strength and excess body fat—face a significantly higher risk of dementia.
Crucially, obesity alone did not increase dementia risk if muscle strength was preserved. This means that maintaining muscle through strength training and staying socially and physically active throughout life are some of the most powerful tools we have to protect our brains.

Fun fact.
July 8, today, turns out to be the day that most people around the planet experience daylight at the same time.
This means, 99% of Earth's 8 billion residents will be on the sunlit side of Earth at the same time.
The International Space Station orbited over Los Angeles on July 4th as America marked 250 years of independence with a burst of fireworks lighting up the city below — a celebration so bright it reached all the way to space!
🚨: The Trump administration fired the scientists who ran the government’s climate website, then shut the site down. The scientists just rebuilt it with their own money and put it back online.
