Women and girls are half the the population, we have a right to words that describe our material reality and we need those words to analyze and confront systems that oppress us based on our bodies. #IStandWithJKRowling
The cost of Western Europe’s rampant prostitution: the genocide of Romanian women
“Romania has become the number one European source country of children and women in the brothels in Germany and Holland, and also Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, Greece and the UK.
Even though the total population of Romania is only about 19 million, there are thousands of Romanian women and children forced into street prostitution in Italy alone – and that’s not counting those in strip clubs, brothels and ‘escort’ prostitution. It’s estimated that there are similar numbers in Spain, the UK, Germany, and Holland – and that’s not considering those in the Arab world and on other continents.
Romania has haemorrhaged more than a million children (girls and boys) and women into the prostitution trade in these countries.
In countries where prostitution is legal, like Germany, only a small percentage of the women involved are locals. German women do not take up this kind of ‘work’ en masse. (Should we wonder why it’s so off-putting?). But the demand is huge – so they outsource to countries like mine.”

“I was an altruistic surrogate for some friends, carrying and giving birth to twins. It was an incredibly traumatic experience, and afterwards I had to receive treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I never talk to anyone about my experience as I still find it utterly devastating.
[…]
I am left with birth injuries, incontinence, and with diastasic recti (separation of the abdominal muscles) which all cause me daily problems. I do not know what the long term health impacts will be of taking large amounts of synthetic hormones, nor the potential increased risk of breast cancer as I did not breastfeed the babies.
I am now completely against ALL surrogacy, both commercial (which is completely immoral in my view) and altruistic unpaid surrogacy. The potential for abuse is too great. Women should not be encouraged to endanger their emotional and physical health and safety for other people’s ‘need’ to have babies. Women matter. Women should not be encouraged to put ourselves second, and to risk our lives for other people.
I recommend that ALL surrogacy should be made unlawful as other countries have done. The law should not be changed to make it easier to exploit women, both women who are vulnerable through poverty and those who are simply well-meaning and ill-informed like me.
I also often think of the poor, young female student in Eastern Europe who had to endure egg harvesting and the life-long consequences of that, to pay for her studies. There is very little that is ‘ethical’ about surrogacy.”

@CTVNationalNews Nope. "U.S. Supreme Court clears way for female sports category to be restricted to female athletes."
Your framing is becoming very tired, perhaps try just doing accurate reporting?

@NBCNews How are lesbians, bisexual women, and women who identify as trans harmed by the ability for states to restrict participation in the female category to females only?
Is it perhaps simply a "major blow" to male entitlement rather than "LGBTQ rights"?
Working as a receptionist in a legal brothel proved to me that prostitution is anything but a normal job
“The media glamorises prostitution and presents the illusion that it’s sexually liberating for women, and sex industry lobbyists claim that it’s just regular work. For a long time I accepted this without question.
I was a receptionist in a legal brothel in Melbourne, Australia, for two years and I’d say things like: these women choose to do this work; the men are nice guys; it’s a just a job; it’s no different from doing massage; and it’s a lot better than flipping burgers in a hot, greasy kitchen.
This was my survival instinct speaking and this is how women in the industry make it through the night. You tell yourself it’s OK and think of the money. It’s what you do to make the best of a bad situation, and to stop feeling too awful about yourself.
In fact there’s nothing normal or empowering about prostitution. But I wasn’t able to say that until I’d been out of the industry for two whole years.
At the time I was doing an art degree and was convinced that “sex work” was an exciting and legitimate career for women. So much so that I wanted to make a graphic novel about the industry. I commissioned stories from women on the inside and created illustrations for “The Honey Pot,” as I decided to call the book.
But my plans didn’t fall into place. I gave the graphic novel a red hot go but it just didn’t feel right. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t make this life seem like it was an empowering choice for women and eventually the penny dropped. I began to see that it’s dark, seedy, and dangerous. Even sitting on the reception desk in an up-market legal brothel was awful. I hate to imagine what it must be like for women in the illegal brothels; those who are forced, underage, can’t speak English, and literally have no choice.
So let me explain what it’s really like in a legal brothel and you can decide for yourself whether it truly is a normal job…”

I think we can all agree: A man who exploits a child for sex before beating her to death, dumping her body and going about his normal life like nothing happened, 100% deserves to face 'hell' in prison.
We do not need fucking journalists turning a child killing sex predator into a fucking pity party.
This is not an exhaustive collection of fucked up headlines around the murder of Donhomla Tunchanok but I wanted to document them anyway.
When men murder women and girls, journalists, sub editors and editors fall over themselves in the rush to turn them into ... things.
A ride on mower is used in a femicide - she becomes the MOWER MURDER.
A wheelie bin is used in a femicide - she becomes the WHEELIE BIN MURDER.
A suitcase is used in a femicide - she becomes the SUITCASE MURDER.
Meanwhile, the same media that reduces Tunchanok to a suitcase is outdoing each other in humanising the man who allegedly killed her.
We know he drives trucks, we know he lost weight, we know he ‘faces hell’ in prison, we know his 'head has been shaved', we know he had a ‘sad' life, we know he had a ‘lonely’ life, we know he had a ‘quiet’ life ... is there anything we don’t fucking know about him.
