Police clashed with protesters in Moyale town on Thursday after residents took to the streets to demand the release of former Chief Dabassa Dambi and community elder Gurach Dambala, whose disappearance under unclear circumstances has triggered tension in the area, leaving at least three people injured after officers fired teargas and live bullets to disperse crowds in the town centre and along key roads.
Residents say the two elders were taken by security officers after publicly opposing the proposed construction of the Tittu security camp and disputing administrative boundary changes affecting parts of Marsabit County, with protesters accusing state agencies of targeting local leaders critical of the government’s actions in the region.
