Do you want to drive on good roads, or do you want a billionaire to make another billion?
When we tax billionaires at 7%, they'll still make $30 million a year for doing nothing. Believe me, they're going to be just fine.
Think about what that actually means for a second.
Eighty years old. A public figure for most of that. Decades in the spotlight, decades of opinions and coverage and the internet doing what the internet does to everyone eventually.
And on the day she died there was not a single disparaging comment. Not one. Across all of social media, across every platform, across every corner of the internet where people make it their personal mission to find something negative to say about anyone.
Just love. Just gratitude. Just sadness that she was gone.
Do you know how rare that is. Do you understand how almost impossible that is to achieve in this current climate where we tear down everyone eventually. Where the discourse finds something, anything, to argue about. Where even the most beloved figures have their detractors showing up on the worst possible day to say something.
Nobody had anything bad to say about Dolly Parton.
Not because people were holding back or being respectful of the moment. But because there was genuinely nothing there. She had lived eighty years in public and given people absolutely nothing to work with except kindness and generosity and talent and love.
That's the legacy.
Not the songs, not the awards, not the Imagination Library, though all of that too.
The fact that the entire internet went quiet and just loved her.
She earned every single bit of it.
Rest easy Dolly. 😢
The crazy thing about this out pouring of love for Dolly Parton is today's billionaires could give 10 times what Dolly gave without even feeling it and they just choose not to, every single day.
This country has agreed on almost nothing in a decade. We agreed on her.
I tried to write this yesterday and couldn’t find a container big enough to hold it. Because the grief wasn’t just mine. It came from every direction at once, from people I’ve argued with across a chamber and across a dinner table, in the same key and at the same depth as the people I love most in this world.
Last night I sat in a church, a room full of neighbors working on something hard, and the woman running the meeting opened with a Dolly quote and closed with another one. Nobody thought it was strange. It was a language everybody in the room already spoke. Then this morning the King’s Guard marched into the forecourt at Buckingham Palace and played “9 to 5” for a girl born in a one-room cabin in the Smokies.
That was her magic. Dolly could stand in the middle of a divided country and somehow nobody was standing across from her. She made people feel seen, not flattered, seen. She handed you back your own dignity like you’d dropped it and she just happened to notice. She didn’t threaten people. She moved them.
It’s the same instinct that made her give away books. She understood what most powerful people never figure out: a child’s world is only as wide as what they’ve been given to imagine. So, she sent hundreds of millions of books to kids who’d never been handed a thing that was theirs alone. That isn’t charity. That’s horizon. A child who reads about the ocean starts believing there’s a version of her life that reaches it. My kids got those books. They know who they came from, and they love her for it.
They grew up on her, too. When Jack was a baby, “9 to 5” was the sound of our mornings, how we got him fed and dressed and out the door. Though some mornings that song wasn’t for him at all. It was for two exhausted parents who needed somebody to promise them the day was survivable. The same song that moved a toddler here in Guilford County was played outside a palace today. That’s not celebrity. That’s closer to grace.
And it’s why this one hurts. We’re living through a stretch where hope feels naive, love feels partisan, and a good laugh feels like something we misplaced. She was all three at once, and she never asked us to earn them first. She never asked us to agree with her. She never asked us to be anything other than what we were.
Dolly, you didn’t just make the world a better place. You made humanity move itself. Toward more hope. More laughs. More love.
We will always remember you.
And, we will always love you.
They are lowering US flags to half-mast for a week, but if the government really wants to pay tribute to Dolly, they should fund education, the arts, and medical research instead of trying to eradicate them.
Rosie O’Donnell has lived rent-free in Trump’s head for nearly 20 years. She knows how to shatter his ego psychologically better than anyone on Earth.
Whatever you do, definitely do NOT retweet this video. He would absolutely lose his mind. 😂👇
Clinton, Obama, and Biden all inherited shitty economies that they turned around and made strong and then voters immediately handed the White House back to Republicans to fuck it up again. I will never understand it.
