Across Gaza, rodents have become a growing crisis in displacement camps and shelters. But the rats themselves are not the root problem. The real issue is the mountains of uncollected garbage and the raw sewage flowing between tents and makeshift homes. Families are living in conditions that no human being should have to endure.

At night, parents stay awake listening for movement. Rats crawl through shelters while children sleep. They bite infants and young children. They contaminate flour, rice, and the little food families manage to secure. Mothers spend hours cleaning only to wake up and find everything soiled again.

What can be done? Traps are scarce. Poison is limited. Sanitation supplies are difficult to obtain. Even the most basic tools needed to control the problem are in short supply because aid and essential goods continue to be restricted from entering Gaza by the occupation. It’s a manufactured psychological toll to cause additional suffering.

The Sameer Project has been working with @apn and seeking expert guidance to find practical solutions for camps and shelters facing the worst infestations. But addressing the problem requires resources, sanitation support, waste removal, and ongoing intervention.
