@JonesPamphlet It's here in the Orion arm with us! 2000 light years isn't too far, with several naked eye stars at that distance. It's towards the Aquila constellation, which is starting to be up in the wee hours and will soon be big and bright in the summer night sky.
Eye rolling headline. If we aren't "baffled" then we're disturbed, I guess. We can't just be excited? It's 2000 light years away. I assure you, we are all very comfortable.
Noting that most of the coffee shop patrons are more annoyed than invested in this spirited conversation, and yet, more and more people are being drawn in.
Overhearing a fascinating debate in an Austin coffee shop this morning. At issue:
Can dogs be feminist?
Side A: No, this is absurd.
Side B: Yes, they can absorb western attitudes about toxic masculinity from their environment.
A new participant has chimed in to add subtlety to Side A: just because the dog may behave poorly towards women, does not mean they *believe* that women are inferior. Thus, they cannot be feminist or anti-feminist, because that is a ~ * belief * ~
Seeing everyone at #AAS243, including myself, quietly doing the right-hand rule in their laps in the Rossi prize pulsar plenary is giving me warm feelings of camaraderie.
Grad Students: Holiday break is upon us. Have you created a daily writing schedule or are you planning to lounge around in PJs under the auspices of self-care?
The academic job market comes down to hairline differences between candidates, similar to sports.
Iโd choose wisely.
I would be much more inclined to show up the "required" 30 minutes before my appointment time if there wasn't nearly 100% chance of me still sitting in the waiting room 30 minutes after my appointment was supposed to start.
Weโve just let a private company do this to the whole planet. You can argue how useful or problematic it is, but the fact remains that most countries on Earth, ergo most humans who have as much right to the night sky as anyone else, didnโt consent to this level of space usage >
I know all the talk recently is about menโs obsession with the Roman Empire but have you tried asking the women in your life how often they think about Anne Boleyn?
Seeing grad app season posts on here - a reminder that Australian PhDs are great, applications are typically taken on a rolling basis, and Iโm looking for a PhD student at UQ on JWST imaging and our colleagues at Sydney for one on the Toliman Space Telescope!
