The operative - you should excuse the pun - point here is that they weren't talking to your wife. They weren't talking to you. They were talking to each other. You guys were, in effect, eavesdropping on a conversation that wasn't directed at you.
As for "I could have lived the rest of my life without hearing that", the whole point of an emergency C-section is that she probably COULDN'T have lived her whole life without that conversation. That's why they were doing the emergency C-section.
The doctors remember that the patient is awake. It's just not their priority at that moment . . . nor should it be.
