Let’s talk about smell preferences and whether we’re born with them. Buckle up - it’s a long one.

I often receive comments claiming that we are innately predisposed to like or dislike various smells. This view has not been empirically validated in humans, though there has been rather a lot of research on this topic.

Rather, the evidence suggests that we learn our smell preferences through acquired emotional associations with scents.

Certainly, there are good reasons for us to avoid certain smells, such as those associated with death, feces or rotting. Although the odours themselves will not harm us, direct contact with the objects emitting them might.

Studies suggest, however, that we are born with a predisposition to learn odour preferences, rather than being born with the preferences themselves.

This means that the odour itself is initially a blank slate. It has been shown that young children show no disgust sensitivity to the smells we are disgusted by in adulthood.

Our responses can be so forceful they feel instinctive, and evidence suggests that it is particularly difficult to rewire our preferences once they have formed, but they are nevertheless learned.

This is why I feel it’s important to draw attention to the role of olfactory prejudices in influencing our judgements about which smells are good or bad. We can learn negative emotional associations with smells we haven’t even encountered before, predisposing us to react negatively.

So, making lame generalisations on the internet about Indians (or any other group) smelling bad really is that deep and it needs to stop.
