We've been made aware of numerous SCAM calls recently in which the scammer is spoofing our phone number. This means that the caller ID on the victim's phone displays LENEXA POLICE DEPARTMENT and our legitimate phone number 913-477-7300. When the victim answers, the SCAMMER claims to be a Lenexa Officer, and in some cases, they are using names of some of our actual personnel.
As with any scam, they weave a story about how the victim missed court, or jury duty, or their identity has been compromised, or their social security account is frozen, or some other tale that can cause the victim to be distressed. The scammer offers to resolve the phony problem if the victim will provide payment over the phone, usually in the form of gift cards.
We will continue to say this until we are blue in the face: neither we nor any other legitimate government agency will demand payment over the phone to resolve a problem, and we certainly would never accept gift cards as payment for anything.
These scammers are very good at what they do! Most victims know better, however in the heat of the moment, they make a decision under duress without consulting a trusted friend or relative. And while senior citizens are often targeted for these scams, we've seen victims in a wide range of ages.
If we had to summarize how to not become a victim, it's this; NEVER PURCHASE A GIFT CARD FOR ANY REASON UNLESS YOU ARE GIVING IT AS AN ACTUAL GIFT TO SOMEONE YOU KNOW. If people followed that advice alone, it would greatly decrease the number of victims who ever fall for scams.
