Stephen Hawking had an affair with his nurse, then married her after divorcing Jane, his wife of 30 years who had supported him through his illness.

The nurse’s former husband was the engineer who adapted Hawking’s speech device for his wheelchair.

The nurse was Elaine Mason. They married in 1995.

Five years later, police investigated concerns about Hawking’s unexplained injuries.

Another inquiry followed in late 2003.

Carers reported a broken wrist, facial cuts and an incident in which he was allegedly left outside in extreme heat, suffering sunburn and heatstroke.

Hawking firmly denied being assaulted. He said he loved Elaine and credited her with keeping him alive.

Both investigations closed without charges. In March 2004, police said they found no evidence substantiating criminal acts against him.

Hawking and Mason divorced in 2006.
