Pedagogy as a discipline is made up, useless information at best. What any teacher needs is practice and mentorship from a good teacher in a real teaching environment
With love to Sarah, I’ve gotten tons of pedagogical training over the years (most of it outside the PhD). Some of it made me a better teacher. Much of it made me a worse teacher. None of it was as useful as subject matter expertise and the ability to perform personal enthusiasm.
Does anyone have any advice for solving a horrific mosquito problem? Our entire yard is 100% unusable all summer. Sprays don’t work—you could soak yourself in DEET, picaridin, lemon oil, anthrax, doesn’t matter, they land on you by the dozens. They attack us IN OUR GARAGE.
@TuttReal I read it a couple years ago and liked the way he tried to argue for a Christian engagement with Islam that could open up some constitutive Christian repressions. But the only other thing I've read from him is some sections of Love's Body
@figuralperson@drumm_colin Training attention to learn and memorize long sequences orally, learning to distinguish different local birds to more attentively listen to your environment
@figuralperson@drumm_colin For me, it's meant thinking hard about what music actually does for kids/people and trying to "do with" as much as possible, rather than transfer information about music. Use of the voice, body and listening to form a group that does things as a group
When simulation becomes the norm, it weakens the human capacity for discernment. As a result, our social bonds close in upon themselves, forming self-referential circuits that no longer expose us to reality. We thus come to live within bubbles, impermeable to one another. Feeling threatened by anyone who is different, we grow unaccustomed to encounter and dialogue. In this way, polarization, conflict, fear and violence spread. What is at stake is not merely the risk of error, but a transformation in our very relationship with truth.
Within digital environments — structured to persuade — interaction is optimized to the point of rendering a real encounter superfluous; the otherness of persons in the flesh is neutralized, and relationships are reduced to functional responses. Dear friends, you, however, are real persons! Creation itself has a body, a breath, a life to be listened to and safeguarded.
#ArtificialIntelligence systems increasingly shape and permeate our mentality and social environments. Like every great historical transformation, this too calls not only for technical competence, but also for a humanistic formation capable of making visible the logic behind economics, embedded biases and forms of power that shape our perception of reality.
