On this day in 2001, the final episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood aired, after nearly 35 years on the air. Towards the end of the show, Mister Rogers reminded his television neighbors that he was proud of all of them.
Each one of us is so much more than any one thing. A sick child is much more than his or her sickness. A pediatrician is more than a medical doctor. You're MUCH more than your job description or your age or your income or your output.
Deep down we know that what matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What really matters is helping others win, too, even if it means slowing down and changing our course now and then.
When those things that we care about so deeply become endangered, we become enraged. And what a healthy thing that is! Without it, we would never stand up and speak out for what we believe.
If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.
