A 17-year-old girl was allegedly hacked to death by her elder brother with a sharp-edged weapon in Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur district on Saturday, days after she had returned home following her recovery by police after leaving with her boyfriend.

In a grim incident reported from Kesagodu village in Belur taluk, a man allegedly murdered his wife and later hanged himself to death. The victim's body is suspected to have been thrown into the Yagachi canal.

The deceased have been identified as Gagana (38) , a housewife from Sanenahalli village in Halebidu hobli, and her husband Raghu (41) , a native of Kesagodu village in Bikkodu hobli, who took his own life after the murder.

The couple had been married for 13 years and have two sons, aged 12 and 6. In recent years, they were running a bakery business in Chikkamagaluru and were residing there with their family.

According to preliminary reports, on Friday, while Raghu was travelling with his wife Gagana to Kesagodu village in their car, he killed her during the journey.

Soon after, he made a video call to his relatives, informing them that he had murdered his wife, creating panic among family members.

Raghu reportedly told his relatives that he had carried his wife's body in the car and dumped it into the Yagachi canal.

Following that confession, he proceeded to Kesagodu village, where he hanged himself and ended his life.

Upon receiving the information, police from Arehalli station rushed to the spot and conducted an inspection.

A joint search operation involving police personnel and rescue teams has been launched to trace Gagana's body in the Yagachi canal.

A case has been registered at Arehalli police station, and investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the gruesome act and other related circumstances.
