When elephants sleep, they reveal a side of their lives that we rarely get to see ! Here, a herd of wild elephants is sleeping peacefully on an island of tall grass in Assam. Elephants can rest and doze while standing, remaining ready to move at the first sign of danger. But lying down is different. It allows the body to relax fully and is associated with deeper, restorative sleep, including REM sleep, the stage linked with dreaming. A landmark study of two free-ranging African elephant matriarchs found that they slept for only about two hours a day. They sometimes remained awake for nearly two days and lay down to sleep only once every three or four nights.

Sleep patterns vary between individuals, ages, species and environments, and much remains to be understood about sleep among wild Asian elephants. But researchers know that elephants are more likely to lie down when they feel comfortable and secure.

That is what makes this sight so beautiful. A herd lying asleep together shows they have allowed their vigilance to trust the landscape around them.

It is unfortunate that proceedings of Parliamentary Standing Committees that are supposed to be privileged are now sought to be used by the government to score brownie points .

My colleague @GauravGogoiAsm is correct no specific proposal qua the recent Merchant Discount Rate -MDR to be levied on UPI transactions from October 15 th 2026 was ever brought before the Parliamentary standing of Finance- rate, quantam , amount of fee to be charged, ceiling and exemption slabs etc.

Even on the principle or conceptual basis of MDR as my colleague @GauravGogoiAsm points out concerns were raised by members with regard to its need , efficacy etc over the course various sittings of the Committee.

To claim that a particular measure was supported by ‘certain members’ of the committee is an inaccurate and fallacious characterisation of the confidential proceedings of a Parliamentary Committee.

At least 21 Palestinians, including 12 children and five women, were killed and 14 others injured after a six-story residential building damaged by Israeli attacks collapsed overnight in western Gaza City. 

Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal told Drop Site’s Abdel Qader Sabbah that the building collapsed at around 3 a.m. as families were sleeping, crushing its six floors on top of one another. Dozens remain trapped beneath the rubble.

“The fate of these people will remain unknown until we can reach them,” Basal said, describing how rescuers lack specialized equipment to locate survivors beneath the concrete due to Israeli restrictions. 

Basal said around 2,000 damaged buildings across Gaza are on the verge of collapse while still housing thousands of Palestinians who have nowhere else to go.

“Are there any alternatives? The truth is, there are no alternatives in Gaza,” Basal said. “Anyone who has experienced the misery of tents and the misery of living inside them cannot leave a concrete building to go back to a tent.”

With insufficient tents and shelter space, Basal appealed directly to the international community, ceasefire guarantors, Board of Peace, and its High Representative, Nickolay Mladenov: “What more are you waiting for?”
