#OnThisDay 1971 @RoyalNavy issued Submariners with dolphin badges, now synonymous with the silent service, at HMS DOLPHIN. The design is a variation of an earlier one designed for @Australian_Navy The ethos imbued in well considered symbology cannot be underestimated.

#OnThisDay 100 years ago in 1923 the Royal Marine Artillery and the Royal Marines Light Infantry amalgamated removing the ranks of Gunner and Private and replacing them with Marine, which is still the case in the @RoyalMarines today. The amalgamation was imposed by post WW1 cuts.

#OnThisDay 1940 during the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from France, the White Star Liner Lancastria is sunk by the Luftwaffe. She had thousands of troops onboard and is the UKs worst maritime disaster. Loss of life was more than 3000 and maybe as high as 6000.

#OnThisDay 10 years ago in 2013, the Royal Navy amended its longstanding traditional toasts to reflect the modern workforce. The originals are in the photo. Tuesday was changed to 'Our Sailors' and Saturday to 'Our families'. Tradition, like the Navy, evolves.

#OnThisDay 70 years ago in 1953 HM Queen Elizabeth II reviewed the Royal Navy at Spithead to celebrate her Coronation. The Fleet consisted of 156 ships from 16 nations including 7 Aircraft Carriers and 300 Fleet Air Arm aircraft from 38 squadrons.

A nickname for a @RoyalNavy sailor is a matelot. The word originates from several languages’ word for comrade. It’s as fitting today as it was then, all are welcome. It’s also obviously linked to mate, used as a friend or even rank in the past but best used as part of Shipmate!

Here we see sailors being issued their "one cup per day" washing water ration, this practice ended some years ago for the surface fleet, however, submariners still uphold this tradition, it's not uncommon for a single cup of water to last a submariner months whilst on deployment

#OnThisDay in 1941, HMS HOOD is lost during Battle of Denmark Strait. HOOD, in company with HMS PRINCE OF WALES (from which her last photo was taken), was engaged with Bismarck and Prince Eugen & hit by shells sinking in 3 minutes with the loss of 1,415 men with just 3 survivors
